Bad news. I just spoke to Edirol and was told that the UA-5 has been discontinued in the US.

yep they decided that a few months ago. thats why doug quit modding em.
it sux. nice boxes for the money.

damn it! that's going to make it hard to get parts/service on these things in the future. I wonder what they're coming out with as a replacement?

The rep on the phone mentioned that the UA-25 was the replacement. UA-25 looks like the hot ticket for laptop taping but unfortunately it will
not work as a stand alone preamp A/D without a laptop connected.
The really nice thing about my UA-5 is that I can use it to run my iBook, Sony M1, JB3, and Edirol R-1. I am hard pressed
to think of another product that would give me these options.

Good point. I have been here at work already for 10+ hours and I guess I better get home before I fall out of my chair. I did the mod myself on my UA-5.. Wondering if anyone has attempted a mod on the new UA-25.

I was under the assumption that he would still do the mod if it was originally purchased from his shop.... at least that's what he told me earlier this summer?

Not quite so easy with the UA-25, though. For example, the bit-depth and sample rate settings are all configured via USB / laptop on the UA-25, whereas the UA-5 had full local control over configuration. I doubt modding the UA-25 would prove workable with a standalone recorder.

Hey Ray, Thanks for the heads up on the Marty Stuart DVD. I have been meaning to jump on that one and now that you say it is great I am going to jump on it.
About 5-6 years ago Marty played a county fair down in Hebron Ct. I was running my CCM's and Sonsax with the mics in my hat. Just as Marty went on stage one of his road guys came and parked his ass right up next to me. The bummer is that I wasn't able to check the levels on my sonosax and the tape got crunched. Really sucks because Marty had just released The Pilgrim and Brad Davis and Gary Hogue RIP were still in the band. I did walk away with a cool autographed pic of Marty in one of his Manuel suits.

yessir, he is phenomenal..there was a great george jones up there too.....

no matter if the ua25 will work as a stand alone or not--there is no place to plug in power, it runs 100% of the power it gets from the usb plug
i have a stock ua-5 for sale in yard right now -- $200
busman will mod it for 25-125, or of course diy

I bet one of our crafty TSers could rig up a USB power cable, though. But, yeah...bottom line - it won't work as a standalone pre/ADC regardless of the power supply, so...doesn't much matter.

Ray,
You weren't kidding. I finally got a chance to watch the Marty Stuart ACL show tonight. Good stuff.
Great to see Marty playing Clarence White's tele again. Wish Marty would come north and play in the Green Mountain State.

Told you Tony! ;)
BTW, I dont know if the george jones is still up there, but That one is great too..

ahhh well, there is always the fa-101...which sounded better than the ua5 any way.
sure, its 2x the price...
oh well.
These non-moded Edirol products...all of them...are sort of "crap-fi" any way. I've made some stunning recordings w/a stock ua5, but for the most part ...hey, it ain't no V2.
Ever try you UA 5 as a DAC? Its actualy pretty solid. nice and open sounding...detailed.

hell no. Youll never see the tide turning. They are the BEST in the price range. Whether you are a beginner, oltimer, whatever. That goes for all oade products. If oyu took a poll, youd see quickly that the tide hasnt and WONT turn. Maybe stock ones arent the best, but Doug worked miracles with em...The sheer numbers of people that have em here speak volumes...After all, the proof is in the pudding.

Nick was talking about the stock units...
"Sheer numbers" dont mean much...Do you think McDonalds makes a good hamburger...?
-
yes, stock only.
the Oade mods are total giant killing machines to be respected!!

That is a piss poor analogy. This is taping, not fast food. If a lot of tapers use a certain kind of gear you can bet your ass that the gear serves tapers well.. Tapers generally wont use things that dont serve the purpose. And Oade mod ua5s have a reputation.
-
BigRay, back off...nobody is talking about the Oade modded units...follow the thread - my comments were directed toward Nicks "crap-fi" comment - which I am inclined to agree with...
No taping is not fast food - but it a solid anaology...the masses tend to gravitate toward mediocrity...Ever hear of Brittany Spears?
50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong!!!

Well said, but I disagree. I paid $125 for my UA-5 and have been playing around with replacing the OP-amp chips (similar to Busman2) and I think for the price, I'll settle for what you guys call "crap fi." Sure, I'd love to have a v2/v3 or even an SBM-1 (which i DO think is pure shit if not modified) but I don't have the money for it. I love the Ua-5, it's easy to power, built like a tank, hasn't given me any trouble (knock on wood), and when you compare values of a UA-5 to say a V3, the Ua-5 wins by a longshot.
That's just me though. I'm not into, or willing to fight about it.

That analogy is not true here. The masses here gravitate towards items that work and sound good. And yeah it applies to music and consumables...but when you are talking about mechanical /electrical equipment that has to be relied on for functionality, that analogy makes about as much sense as saying OAR is a good band. And there are a fair amount of folks that use them without being modded. Some analogies dont work everywhere.
And Elvis is the Shit, btw.
-
Do you think there are more stock UA5s in use or modded?
Has Oade ever mentioned which he has sold more of...? (perhaps not a fair indicator)
-
I have been running my own tonyvt modded UA-5 for the past two years and it sounds great.
The King rules!!!

Here...probably modded...but im sure probably more stock in use..as many dont know about the mods probably..
-
I'm not sure I'd call the R4 "crap-fi" at all. For less than 2 grand you get a 4 channel, 24/96 capable, all in one box.
-
I equate Edirol with Creative Labs...decent priced stuff that performs for what you need, but for the most part sucks (like OAR).

but...its preamp is not all that. I thought it was pretty good at first..but then I started running it at larger venues..and hearing that it actualy sucks. makes me want to revise my reivew.
the product is cool..but its sound is far from high end

Mickeyd's burgers aren't the best but a 99 cent double cheeseburger is still a good value- just like those cheap ass ua5s ;D
