If you haven't, I strongly recommend you hit up
http://www.audiokarma.org. Very knowledgeable and friendly folks over there. I don't know anything about the cart you're asking about, but I can say that I started running a Pioneer PL-7 with a brand new (Dad had it as a backup for years and never took it out of the box) Stanton L847S as my 2nd TT, and I like the sound a lot. My main deck is a Rega RP1 with an Ortofon 2M Blue cart and the improved belt and wool mat, and it sounds better, but the Pioneer/Stanton is nothing to shake a stick at.
The 440 looks like one of the nicer, older-style TTs Pioneer did. Should be a good deck. I guess my concern about the cart would primarily be how much use it has had. If the guy used it regularly since the 1980s, it is almost certainly shot.
But anyway, as I said, audiokarma people can probably give you a very detailed answer, including telling you how to see if the cart is worn (besides the obvious, if it sounds bad).
