wouldn't they work either way?

in particular, i'm looking for something that can go headphone in and not lightning cable in (at an extra cost).

maybe that's what you meant for "works with an iPhone4"...

although... if he had the $30 iPhone4 to 5 adapter... it might work, right?

the adapter is totally different. i would suggest he look at an M-10 or other small inexpensive recorder

With the original iphone connector, you could look at using the Tascam IM2 or IM2x mic attachment for an iphone, or the IXJ2 for getting a mic/line input into an iphone.

Couldn't tell you about sound quality, but for $28 it's hard to picture that you could get into taping any cheaper if you were an owner of an iphone 4.  Not sure even Fisher-Price could match that for low pricing. :P

Rode iXY for iPhone is an alternative. Here's a recording with one on Dime - I still don't know what to think about it:

Already mentioned, but Tascam IXJ2 for iPhone/IOS devices.  ($60-80)

Would like to hear feedback on the IXJ2.

does not work with iphone 5 though
tascam is working on a iphone 5 device and adapter cable for the 4 devices
i would be more worried about run times on these things then anything else though
also wonder what happens if you get a call or txt

I've used the Tascam iM2 with a lightning pin adapter and can confirm it works and can recommend the iM2.

A tip. If you can't get the recording to start in stereo, turn your iPod off and on again, so you'll want to start recording 5 or 10 minutes before the show starts in case you need to do so. I believe this is a problem with the app I was using, not the mic, but just so users know.

I would definitely put the phone into airplane mode to turn off cellular/wifi/bluetooth if I were to record on it.  Hopefully helps with battery life, but I wouldn't want to risk what incoming calls or text do to the recording.

I'm sure I could live without my phone for a couple hours at a time during recording sessions, but giving up your smartphone and its capabilities and communications while recording is probably an issue for individuals to consider.  Nice way of saying that some people have a serious smartphone addiction. :P

I've seen one of these in action, twice now on two separate occasions by the same dude. He said he makes really good recordings (24/96 even) with it, but I have yet to hear anything he's made. He said there is an option to automatically upload the files to dropbox and one other cloud solution, but the name escapes me.

is this th app you use https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=tascam%20iphone%20app&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CDMQFjAE&url=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Fapp%2Fpcmrecorder%2Fid481055155%3Fmt%3D8&ei=OP3IUcOgF6j00QHL6YGgBw&usg=AFQjCNESijF-EzwFW-NzOjFLCoygyrCBkA&sig2=KlH4jrytHYa32jSW44wG-w&bvm=bv.48293060,d.dmQ
Can you confirm you can use the app without the tasam device connected
For example record as a handheld using the iphone mic
As a free app it might be worth having evn without a tasam device

Just got this email too http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category/WES_24JUNE2013

I was just playing with this app today.  Yes you can record using the mono mic of the iphone.

As for using your smartphone as a recording device, how buy another iPhone used?  Essentially an itouch with a nicer camera.  I have a backup iphone I found for $140 in newish condition.  Clean ESN.
A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.
