Wavelab 6 - workflow for 24/48 to 16/44?
« on: July 09, 2011, 03:04:42 PM »
I've had Wavelab 6 installed for about a year and never quite sorted out the workflow for processing my 24bit/48kHz master WAV files to 16bit/44.1kHz WAV files.  I've been using Audacity and CD Wave for years.  Normally, I only amplify/resample/dither in Audacity and then export the file at 16/44, tracking in CD Wave.  I've tried a couple shows in Wavelab, but they never seem to give me the results I'm expecting - not sure if I have the correct resampler plugins, etc. or if my settings are just set to "make it sound like ass".  I'll start searching the Google, but thought someone more familiar with Wavelab and what we need to do with it might be able to help.

I've never used wavelab for complete workflow if resampling is involved. The UV22 hr dither is just fine, but I think the resampling leaves something to be desired. I would use r8brain (just for resampling, not dither) or izotope.

I use the Crystal Resampler (included w/ Wavelab 6) set to Ultra, and Waves L3 plugin (Type 1 dither, Normal shaping) below that for dithering to 16bit.  Then set the "Dithering" pane (below the Effects and Master sections) to None.  When you save the file you'll still need to select 16/44 or it will save it as 24bit even though it now only has 16bits worth of data.

here is an old walk through I posted a few years ago.  this is how I do 24/28 > 16/44.  I do any editing (gain, fades etc) and save as 24 bit.  then track the 24bit in cdwave.  then do the batch.

update with whatever plugins you want ;)  so instead of resampler 192 I now use Crystal Resampler on high (ultra takes forever) and I now use  izotope 4.

Quote
batch process in wavelab

open wavelab and go to tools > batch.  then you should be on input.  input the tracked 24 bit files.  then go to output and point it to save in your 16 bit folder or wherever.  also make sure that output is set to 16/44.

go back to input.  there is a little box over to the right (between the A and extras buttons).  that is the edit batch plugins button.   click on it and then click on plugins > resampler 192.  click on it.  it should then move to the window on the left (sequence) .  double click on it to be sure it's set to 44.1.  then look back at the plugins and click on VST.  select what you use to dither.  I use izotope 3 most of you use uv22hr.    so under sequence should be resampler first and then the dither tool.    if you use izotope you must click on it to open it up and set up (turn on) the dither.  you do not have to for uv22hr.  always resample first then dither.

hit ok and then run and you will output 16/44 tracks from the 24 xx tracks.

thanks, Gordon.  I've got a few shows from Mountain Jam left to master and might try changing my workflow with them.

place in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VstPlugins

then in wavelab in the master section (the little grey box that has effects, master, dither) expand effects > click on 1 > vst > anwida.  if you don't see that option then go to options (in toolbar) > organize master section plugins > vst.  then be sure the box on the left is checked beside whatever plugin you want (anwida).  this will make them show in the master effects section.

Yep, just saw that (it was the "PAD" header info)...

Batching the 16 bit files now...  I guess I'll see.  I wasn't sure what setting to use in iZotope so I left it at default.

dither type = MBIT+
noise shaping = high
dither amount = normal

Hmmm... Not sure where those settings are - in iZotope or somewhere else?  The recording sounds good, so I apparently got away from the "sounds like ass" setting.
