Help with my DMIC-20 and rig
« on: June 06, 2003, 07:55:59 PM »
I have 2 AKG 391's>DMIC-20>CO2>minidisc
Ive recorded 2 shows so far (managery <-something like that, and garage a trois).  The problem im having is getting the leveling right on my DMIC-20.  Any suggestions would help.  Also what about adjusting the mics to -10db?
thanks for any help you can provide

what is your main problem??? i have been running one for four years now and all i can say is make sure your mics are as level and parallel to the stage as possible.once this is achieved, you can only get them so close, which, sometimes is PERFECT......but i wish they had a trim on them..... :'( otherwise, i LOVE this unit.....so compact and easy to run..... 8)

Did either of you get the mod with the dials done to yours?  If so do you know where to get it done?

its a mod for a knob that allows you to use all of the  5db of gain in between dip switches...kind of a fine tune adjustment.

looks really cool on paper and I've seen pics of it...imagine a knob over each row of switches.....ahhhhhhhhh

no more hitting -2db  the whole show!!!!!!!

Here you go...these are the instructions for the dmic 20 adjustable gain knobs.
This is compiled of exerts from a couple of different emails.
hope this helps ;D ;D

note: the "I" in the rest of this is not me, I have not done this mod yet,  but soon ;)

mail#1

i have no schematics but heres the deal. the dmic has adjustment pots in it. crack the case open and see r65 and r66.

unsolder them and get replacements rated at 5k ohm .25watt.
mount them on the front panel and connect wires to the holes where the old pots were and your in business.

go to http://www.routeflap.net/dmic20/ to see pics.

mail#2

i decided to add those new pots with nice knobs to the front panel instead of the trimmers from inside.

the pots seem to be $5 ea./knobs $2 from various places on the web. i'm using  Calrad 25-395 5K ohm dual audio taper 1/4 watt. dont need the dual taper,  but couldnt find a single taper that was small enuf, etc.

the knobs are  Calrad 85-591 $2.25  (thats whats on the dmic in the pics on the website i posted)  i verified with GP engineering that those trimmer pots were 5K ohm 1/4 watt of course :)

mail #3

i get the calrad pots from cablesandconnectors.com

made by Calrad,  part# 25-395  (5k ohm dual audio taper 0.25 watt)

they 'dual' which means they have 2 sets of contacts, but u only wire
one set obviously. i couldnt find a single taper pot that was the same
specs and the perfect size to fit good. there is no issue with it being
dual..

just means 2 sets of contacts in case u wanna connect right and left to
the same pot. ie: stereo volume knob.  wire it to either set of
contacts.

the knobs that i used are calrad part# 85-591  they come in different
colors tho depending on the part #.

Bean...tell us how it turns out!!!!

Shouldn't be hard at all: Looks like the faceplate comes off rather easily.  Use a punch before setting the drillbit and put something like a 2X4 under the plate when you drill.

Looks like it will help you fine-tune much easier!!

Also what about adjusting the mics to -10db?
thanks for any help you can provide
Kevin

Good god no! Don't use those switches on the se300 bodies, they sound like crap. The -10db pad just sucks the life out of those microphones. I'm not too fond of how the rolloff sounds either!

i havent soldered pots in quite awhile, so any help would rock......

ok, on cablesandconnectors.com, they have the normal pots(calrad #25-395) when i take out the normal 3 pins that the board is already soldered to,on the old pot, how would i hook them up so i know trim is werking right....

what im saying is, i dont wanna hook up the trim backwards.....i know the middle is gnd....

i should be phine, but dont like ripping equpip. apart..... ;D
