Dumb question, but please answer re sound card in my G5
« on: April 05, 2007, 02:29:10 PM »
This sounds and perhaps is dumb.  I had a PC with a great soundcard in it and used to do quite a bit of digital editing with a program called Samplitude.  I then bought a Mac G5 dual processor machine.  I have looked through the documentation and see that it has a "digital audio in" plug.

Does my Mac have a sound card in it?

Could I digitize things with it?  If not, and I buy a sound editing program, I suppose I import digital files  -- how exactly.

If I don't have a good one, do I need one, and for what?  What would you recommend?

How do I hook my monitors up to my Mac?

Please forgive my lack of knowledge.  At least this should provide some amusement to the sages who exchange messages here.

George Paul

You might want to check in on the "Team Mac" thread in the team forums - that's all about Mac-centric taping stuff. Some good recommendations there.

But yes - that "digital audio in" is on the built-in sound card. As far as I know, it's optical (TOSlink) and it's bit perfect. So if you have a Fostex D5 or some other DAT with an optical out, that's all the hardware you need!

As for how you hook up monitors, the plugs are in the back of the tower - two DVI ports, probably horizontally oriented at the bottom of the square panel in the back (depending on your model; maybe they all have two; not sure). It should have also come with a VGA-to-DVI adapter that you may need if your monitor is on the older side.

I think by monitors, since he is talking about audio, he means his speakers.

To the OP - can you clarify?

If it speakers you are trying to connect, why not use the 1/8" out?

I have a G5, I use the digital in to input from my DAT and MD home decks, I can then monitor through the digital out via my receiver which has a digital input. hope this helps!
