Reducing strobe light effects?
« on: August 23, 2011, 02:37:57 AM »
Recently, I recorded a couple of shows at a small to middle-sized venue using my Sony HDR-CX550VEB camcorder. I was filming from a great vantage point very close to the stage - the only downside being excessive strobe light effects with one of these bands.

Which sort of filters would you use to reduce occasional flashes of strobe light? Neutral density filters, circular polarizing filters or anything else? And, if so, which transmittance value would you pick?

Would you recommend filters in low-light situations like at small clubs anyway?

Do you want to reduce the strobes or the effects of the strobes (ie. out of focus picture)?

Strobing lights can cause your video camera to lose focus if you're shooting in autofocus. So the easiest way to fix that problem is by manually setting the focus. The same goes with the exposure setting. Lock it in.

Actually, I want to reduce the glare resulting from strobing lights (and especially backlighting).
I found a couple of suggestions to use a lens hood or polarizing filters, so I might try that first.
But thanks for your suggestions anyway.

Do you have a pic or sample of the effect you are referring to?

Yes. I've filmed a few more sets with my HDR-CX550VEB using a step-up ring (M37-M58) and a special lens hood for wide-angle camcorders (58mm) and, so far, I haven't run into the same issue again.

Do you have a pic or sample of the effect you are referring to?

The starbust from concert lights I got using a panasonic hdc sd600:

While this is the image I would like to get:

What settings do I need to choose?

wich lens hood did you use?

This one. It's quite cheap and does its job.
http://www.amazon.de/Leinox-Gegenlichtblende-Streulichtblende-Weitwinkel-Objektive-Filtergewinde/dp/B004U5TNEK/ref=sr_1_3?s=ce-de&ie=UTF8&qid=1331376544&sr=1-3

Note: The full diameter of thread of my Sony camcorder is 37mm. The HDR-CX550VEB has an enhanced wide-angle lens. If you're using a lens hood with a diametre of less than 58mm you might see the edges of the hood when shooting in wide-angle mode. Therefore I had to buy a adapter/step-up ring (37mm->58mm), too.

As for you screen captures:  Did you use the cross screen / star filter deliberately on the first picture?

Thanks for the info on the lens hood. About your question: I did not use a star filter. This how the imaged looked when using no filters and filming in auto settings.
That's why I asked if there is any setting to prevent the image having stars like that.
Hope someone can help!

You are recording with an almost closed aperture you need a wide open aperture to avoid the star effect. a lens hood will not solve that.open up the aperture and use neutral density filters or increase the shutter speed.
