That $5 preamp will need some more components to work safely. More like my schematic presented earlier:

Maybe some protecting diods have to be added? I was not going for phantom power at all. The battery supply was intended to be +/-7.4 V. I think that would allow for an output of 5V (about 2V less than the supply rails). My gear needs 2.5V for 0dBFS. Noise is not a problem with the INA217 as long as the gain is above 20dB. I use 25-40dB most of the time. The mic preamp was intended to sit just 5-10 cm away from the balanced input of the soundcard. No need for capacitors in series of the output as there are some at the input of the soundcard.

Electric bluegrass recorded with AKG C-462 (A/B) > Naiant littlekit (INA111) > iHP-120

No bass roll-off, EQ or compression was used.

Perhaps a fixed gain doesn't have commercial appeal but it does indeed work in niche markets.  Please see the venerable fixed gain Oade M148 for example.  ;)
Yes, but what do you HEAR?

My Naiant pre-amp doesn't have fixed gain.
See the photo below. My kit pre-amp is in the middle with the two knobs and red LED.

None of the Naiant littleboxes are fixed gain... as far as I know.

I have to say that I am very happy with mine, so far.
