Opinions on Oppo BDP-103
« on: July 28, 2016, 09:53:01 PM »
Kind of thinking about picking one of these up. I know the 105 is supposed to be much better but I rarely watch anything on discs and can't justify the $1300. Anyone have a 103?

Best 400 I spent in a long time. However, I use an external DAC. The features this unit provides are incredible. Since you don't watch much video just get the standard version not the Darby. However, if you are going to use the internal DAC you might want to to spring for the 105, not that the 103's are bad but rather the 105 are significantly better. You will most like never need an external DAC for the 105.

Thanks the intended use would be for bluray playback on an outdoor projection screen with PA speakers in a stereo arrangement. Otherwise I would use it indoors with an Apple TV through HDMI in and then HDMI out to an LCD with a Sonos soundbar for audio. I certainly wouldn't be using it to its potential. At some point down the road, I may find another use for it, but I no longer have any serious audio equipment.

for your first use, I'd seriously doubt you'd realize any discernible difference between the oppo and the cheapest bluray player (with stereo analog out) you could find.  For your second use, not understanding what advantage you'd realize using it for an hdmi pass-through.

I decided against it and am going to look for a lower cost player with stereo out. They are a bit hard to find however. The closest I can find is a bit over $300 and at that point, I was thinking the extra $200 might be worth it.

Regarding the HDMI passthrough, my understanding is that the HDMI input can be sent to the 2 HDMI outputs. In my setup, I have a flat screen in a room that also has a mounted projector. The Apple TV4 is going into a receiver and then by HDMI out to the projector. I use both screens and would prefer not to have to buy a second Apple TV4 or unplug cables. The receiver only has a single HDMI out.

John == gotchya -- search down a Samsung bd-f7500, available refurbished for around $160 - per http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/blu-ray-players-with-analog-rca-audio-output-jacks.467757/page-2 this can be set to send 2 channel audio through its rca ports

Also, looks like it's easy to split an hdmi signal with a $15 hdmi splitter -- see, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/HD-102-Powered-Splitter-Certified-Support/dp/B005HXFARS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470171749&sr=8-1&keywords=hdmi+splitter+1+x+2

If you just need a blurry player with analog audio out check out the Panasonic BDT220 / BDT230. They are all over eBay for around $50. I may even have one lying around myself. Rock solid player that sounded pretty good amd had great video. No real fancy features but if you just want to play a Bluray and use the analog out it will get the job done.

With that being said, the Oppo's are fantastic but definitely geared toward a high end setup which is why they are so expensive.
