Topic: Tascam DR-680 question

If you leave the 8 AA's installed when not in use, do the batteries drain in a week or 2 like the Fostex FR-2 LE and some other recorders?

I know you need to use an external battery with this machine, but I'd want to have AA's installed in case the external battery accidentally gets disconnected......

I have no experience with the Fostex, but I have found the batteries in my Tascam DR 680 drain quite slowly, which is unlike my Tascam HD P2 where they drain fairly fast. I have gone a few months (my timeline is not scientific, it is based on my ageing memory  ) and still found the batteries to be strong. I am using Kirkland or Duracell alkaline batteries, not rechargeables in these decks.

I have no patience for having to take out a recorder's internal batteries after every use.

Couldn't you just take out one battery and it would cut the circuit, therefore no drain? Just a thought. A lot easier than whipping out all eight, which is a pain in the ass.

I take mine out when I'm not planning on using it for a while (which is most of the time). More often than not I'm using the M10 these days. I only use the 680 when I want to run more than 2 channels.

No idea what an exact number would be on what an appropriate time between shows would be to make it a good idea to remove them. I'd say I take them out if it's going to be more than a month before the next use. YMMV.

I find Eneloops seem to be lasting months in my DR 680 with minimal drain. Seems like a bit more than self discharge alone.

But no way would I let alkalines sit in any of my devices for extended periods. There's just too much anecdotal leaking of alkalines, including my own gear. Eneloops seem to not be leak prone.

I remove all batteries from all recorders when not in use.  I don't want a mess.

this is not so much a reply as it is another question, figured I could group it in this thread. Any way I was wondering if there is a way to control the volume/output levels from the RCA outs on this machine??

Yep.  On the front panel just press 'mix level.'  That screen lets you have control of the channel output levels.  Adjusting those levels won't affect your recorded file at all, just the outputs.
