I just traded my two crappy upper balcony seats for one dead center first row lodge.
Lets roll tape.

I have an abnormal rig, but its all i have.  Wondering how the pro's would make the most of my gear.

Two electrovoice 655C - Omni Directional Dynamic
http://www.coutant.org/655c/index.html

One Presonus Dual Path Blue Tube
https://www.presonus.com/products/bluetube-DP-v2

one Tascam DR-2D.

My questions....

Mic Positions? - Xy  or A B pattern? ill be front row balcony, so i can separate them and brace them.

Pre Amp- Where can I correctly purchase an external battery?  +12 VDC, 1A, center pin positive -  i worry i might buy the wrong one.
also,  should i even bother bringing this pre?  These are dynamic microphones,  I could just 1/8inch chord them straight into the dr-2d and save the hassle.

If I do bring the pre... anyone know anything about the tubes in this thing?  Could I replace them for better ones.  And what are the better ones?

Thanks All,  c ya there?

If you're just running a pair of omnis, I wouldn't do XY.  Best bet is probably to space them as wide as you can get away with.

Hi, Elguapo511

I totally agree with heathen

With 2 omni microphones, you need to use the AB recording technique,

discarding the 2 microphones of 40cms minimum and maximum of several meters,
taking into account the distance of the source and the width of the source
for not to create an empty central area in the recorded sound.

Great recording for you

I've taped from this position several times this year - a few pieces of advice.

-They will tell you that you can't tape at the door. Either bring it in as minimally as you can, or be prepared to keep working through people until they find someone who knows whats going on and allows it.

-They're very strict about gear on the ledge - I gave up trying to clamp. Using a gorillapod gaff-taped to the balcony side of the ledge worked, as did a really minimalist DPA rig with the mics just taped down, separated as much as possible. There's kind of a mini-ledge that will be towards you that you can use to set your deck on, lightly taped down if you need.

This was for TTB & Phil/Bobby - so as open as you can get in terms of taping, but I still had difficulties (for TTB, at least). I'd just try to keep it as inconspicuous as possible...

Good luck!

What do you mean “taped to the balcony side of the ledge?

Any other advice?

Any thoughts on separation distance?  For my dynamics ?

Separate your mics as far as they can go if they’re omnis.

By ledge I mean the mezz ledge is kind of two layered - one closer to the stage that the venue doesn’t want anything on. Off of that is like a sub-ledge that you can secure your gear to with tape.

So.... i have a dr2d which is kinda like a four track.

will the world explode if I brought in a kick drum mic to pull from the the middle of the two omi's?   for the low?

As long as you're not mixing it down to stereo live, you could always throw that out in post if you don't like the sound of it.

Yeah, do it as long as it involves taking down separate tracks and you can deal with it in post. That middle cardiod should add some good balance to the omnis.
music IS love

When you get confused, listen to the music play!

Well, it all worked out, just as i was told. they would not let me in at the door, but eventually did after trey walked me in.

recording came out fine w tons of bass, almost too much.  The vocals were not that great in the venue, but plenty of distortions and lots of hi hat.  This would be perfect for a metrix with their release.  so if anyone feels like handling that,  ill just be listening to one big track.

thanks all.
