PSP-2 / PSP-3

What's going to be the main difference in these two?

PSP2 is a transformer pre... ala the Oade m148 and the MP2. Tends to skew towards the warmer side of the scale. I really like it with the right mics(dpa 402x series, neumann km100 series)

PSP3 is not a transformer based pre and is cleaner sounding. It has variable gain whereas the PSP2 has stepped gain like an MV100. I haven't used it much but I like it.

PSP2 hasn't been made in a while. EAA went under and AETA bought up their parts and issued a series of AETA PSP2's.

They're both very nice preamps, both small and stealthable. I can't remember but I'm pretty sure the PSP3 has m/s capabilities. What do you want to run with them?

I'm still pondering what to put behind 480's. There are just so many choices, and I'm having a hard time finding some comparrison tapes with alot of dirrent pre's A/D's

I thought the 48x series sounded great through the v3 I patched out of (patching sucks) at summercamp.  I think it was split 482->v3.  I might be able to swing a sample of two if you want to hear.  I thought they sounded like arse through the v2 however.

Daryan, Have some of Eric N's DMB shows from last year from his 481 > V3

I'm going to swing by the archives and look for some on there I reckon, thanks though!

I'd be happy to do a b+p or trade (or ftp for that matter) of some of my 480 tapes...

Got a whole butload of 480 -> ps2 -> inbox  and a few 480 -> MiniMe tapes... I can tell you this:  One listen to the 480 -> MineMe tapes and you won't even think about the ps2 -> inbox tapes.

Get in touch if you like.

Scott - I hadn't heard that. Some people thought that the beyer/sonosax were the same but they sound too different (to me) for that to be true.

I ran 481>psp-2 for a couple of outdoor bluegrass shows last summer.  Those two pair well to my ears.  Depending on what A/D you are using, the psp2 is a great pre.

Though I have not run one, as far as I know, the psp3 does have mid-side capability.

Let me know if you want a 481>psp2>da-p1 to sample.  Sam Bush, John Randall, and Vassar Clemments @ smilefest.

I've heard some nice AKG>EAA/AETA tapes; based on that, I picked a psp-2 for my DPA's.  Should be here in the next day or two, but I don't have anything to tape for a while :(

i think the beyer and sonosax share the same case, but that's it

as for the beyer/psp3 connection, check doug's thoughts here:
http://www.oade.com/cgi-bin/miva?showmsg.mv+message=1734

summed up:
>>So, you can build a design around a
chip, like the AD SSM2017 (  Beyer MV100 & Aeta PSP3 ) and you get a
certain sound quality. You can add features to it, like M-S
decoding, a rugged well designed case, interesting ergonomics, etc.
and get a package like the Aeta, that sells for more than the Beyer
for a good reason. Yes, they sound very much the same, but the
feature set is very different. <<

In that certain post, it sounds as if Doug like both the M2 and PSP3, but prefers the M2 over the PSP3. Very informative either way though
