Topic: TDK DVD-R's 4x or 8x

I've been authoring some dvd-videos of Duke Basketball games the past month or so and have been using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 to create the video_ts directories/vobs. I then go to Nero to burn a data backup on dvd-r and a video dvd-r. I've been using mainly TDK DVD+R (4x) and TDK DVD-R (8x) but burning on the slowest speed available (2x or 2.4x). What I'm finding is that the DVD-R (8x) is not passing the data verification step in Nero just about 1 out of every 3 burns. The DVD+R (4x) seems to be more reliable than the DVD-R (8x). Is this what I should expect? I'm using a Sony dual-layer IDE burner capable of 8x but I had read good things about them before I got it.

i have no idea what that data verification thing is, but i wouldn't worry about it.  i think you can turn it off even.  i had it turned on for the first 5 or so discs i burned and not one of them passed, however they play fine in everything i've ever put them in.

as long as you burn slow, keep from multi tasking too much, and have a decent puter, i think you'll be safe.

i always have problems with discs that dont pass the nero data verification in my player... i always use it and if it fails i burn a new copy. im using 4x ritek discs and burning at 2x

i don't think i've ever burned another copy.  the only time i have problems is when i write from my one hdd cuz its fried and can't write/read as fast as it should.  i'm hoping office max still has those 300gb drives at the end of the week.

Sweet...any chance for a B+P of some of those?  You doing current games or older games?

you might want to check out club.cdfreaks.com.  Chances are you may get better results w/ a firmware update for your burner.  also checkout kprobe to check the quality of your burns.  and disc identifier to see what kind of media you really have.  I had nothing but coasters till i upgraded my firmware and found some settings that yielded good results to kprobe.

this may sound dumb, but... i know there a many DVD burners out there that are 8x/16x burners. but true 8x media is still less prevelant. yes, you may go to a site that says, "TDK 8x DVD-R" or "Verbatim 8x DVD+R" or whatever. but it's really 4x media that many people find suitable for 8x burning speeds (the media can take it, i.e. burn it without getting an error during the burning process). but a lot of it is really only 4x media, mis-advertised. i have a lot of TY 8x DVD-Rs, as they were advertised, but if you check the info on the media with something like DVDInfo Pro, you'll see it's *really* only rated for 4x burning.

what operating system are you using and how much RAM do you have....for a while i was using win 2k pro and only had about 256 ram, and it wouldn't burn up to its capabilities....but then i installed win XP pro and some more ram and presto, my dvd burner burns at 8 speed

DVDs in 10 minutes make me smile
