Title: Best mic for Canon HVxx series
Post by: Semayat on July 26, 2010, 09:44:12 AM
Hi,

I will use a brand new Canon HV20 to record indoor shows (small clubs mainly) and I am looking for a good mic I'll plug into the camera.
This mic will need a mount to put on the camera.
What would you suggest  (I am looking only directionnal microphone, NO binaural) ?

- Rode
- Seinheiser
- Audio Technica
etc.

Looking to spend less than 250$

Thanks in advance for your informations!!  :)

You can actually get decent sound from the built-in mic on this camera by using the manual audio level, turn on the limiter or similar and windcut and set the manual control to -12db.this the only cam i ever could use the audio from.honestly if your not satisfied with that using a plugin mic will just be a waste of money, use a seperate audio recorder.------"Quote from older post i made on this very subject".----I always run seperate audio, you shouldn't rely on the camera audio.I have the Canon hv30 and have recorded extremely loud concerts with good results which i have not achieved with any other camcorder even 3500 dollar camcoreders. The key is to control the audio level in the camera manually.First go into the menu and turn ON the limiter and turn ON the wind cut.Now make sure the switch on the right side is set to P not A.P is manual control. Now press in the joystick once and you should see a mini menu which allows for exposure and audio control.Select the audio and you should see a Green bar below the levels make sure the loudest sounds don't go past -12db.Now you should have useable undistorted audio from the camera.Run your seperate audio recorder and know you have 2 sources you could mix together in post. Here's one i recorded this is the camera audio only I can tell you this was very loud and i was in front of the stack.I had to use an 11db attenuator on my DPA 4061 source.Again this clip is just the camera audio built in internal mic using the method i described above.

I use a $64 Sony ECM-MS907 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/150434-REG/Sony_ECMMS907.html) on my XH-A1 and have been extremely pleased with the results.  It does not ship with a mounting solution for the HV-20 shoe, but you could easily whip up a DIY mount.  This mic runs forever on 1 internal AA battery.

Some close friends of mine have had horrible results using the Rode Videomic with the HV-30 for loud rock shows, FYI.

Will your HV-20 always be tripod mounted?  Will the angle be stationary, or will you be panning throughout the show?

Tks for all your inputs.

- I know the Canons have good sound renditions. I used to have a FS100 lately and I've always been pleased with the results.
But I am looking for a hypercardioid mic to mount on my HV20.
I use to have at least 2 sources at each shows (sbd sometimes, but i do not especially like sbd / AT mics)

- Tks for your information!
I will use a tripod and will be stationary, that's why i'ld like to use hyper/card.

I don't know, maybe seinheiser MKE 400?
Or any AT?

The ECM-MS908C is the exact same mic as the 907 with a camera mount.

The Sony mic is decent for an all around budget mic.  It's lacking on the low end a bit but it handles loud sound well.  I never filmed a loud concert with one but I filmed a high school prom right next to the DJ's speakers cranked way up and the audio was clear and usable.

The ECM-MS908C is the exact same mic as the 907 with a camera mount.

Indeed, only it is discontinued and $25 more expensive at those retailers with stock remaining.

It's been several years since I bought one so I didn't know that bit of info.

I used to use my Rode Videomic with an old Canon Elura 65 miniDV camera and now use it with a Canon HF S100 HD camcorder. I've never had any problems at loud rock shows and I've used both camcorders with their audio settings on auto. I just have the videomic set to -20db and have its high-pass filter on.

I have pretty good feedbacks on AT822 (and as I love AT mics, I might test one).
That Rode videomic is kindy big  :o

I use 2 hv30's and 1 hv40 for camera work.  I use the canon DM-50 on one camera.  The also have 2 Rode NTG2 shotguns.  Really good off axis rejection with real good tone quality and very directional.

Also use DPA 4022 and DPA 4061 for audio off camera.  Great set up for concerts for video and audio.  Dont trade these shows though so no test to give you because the shows are really good and due to the internet trade community being a little suspect I have elected not to share.

good luck
