Opinions on Schoeps>Aerco.... ?
« on: February 17, 2012, 02:03:50 PM »
Haven't seen as many people running this pre of late, but having now learned that it can be externally powered and have an internal rechargeable batt, it has piqued my interest.

I've heard some really killer pulls with it - Myco's MG210>Aerco's come to mind - but am curious what other users out there with similar gear have thought about it.

-Q- should have a bunch on the archive with his CCM4's.  Look for taper "Carl Daniels", probably a bunch of Ryan Montbleau and Assembly of Dust shows.

I recently inquired about this option.  They use a pair of lithium polymer model helicopter batteries; they get better run-times than alkalines in the Aerco.  Considerably lighter too...

It costs a bit more, but given the price of 9V batteries, you make up the difference really quickly.

Yes.  It's 150 more (the internal LI-ion littlebox also costs more) but yeah, the convenience and batt life difference moots that quickly. I wish Jerry would advertise the option- would probably increase his business a good bit!

^^^ I asked him about that too.  He said he was "tragically behind" in updating his website!  Well, I guess he does get some word-of-mouth.  I think I read it here somewhere...

I never cared for the Aerco. IMO it's sonics are just a slight step up from the Beyer MV-100, but no where close to a Sonosax, V2 or V3. I supposed if you need a small preamp that'll run on 9 volt (or whatever sized it uses) batteries, and you don't want to part with $700+ for a used Sax, then the Aerco is a good option.

Link please to the model you used?  I have an Aerco, and I have not seen anyone run the internal lithiums at all.

How much have you run the aerco, and with what gear?

I've run the aerco head to head against a sonosax and the v3.  I much preferred it to the sonosax.  I've run an aerco very often with gefells but not so much with schoeps (not enough to comment on it definitively in that combination).

I don't know what model, as I was just repeating what Jerry Chamkis told me.  Like acidjack notes above, he charges $150 above the usual cost of the pre for the rechargeables and the accompanying charger...

Quote from: Jerry Chamkis
We fit a pair of lithium-polymer (model helicopter) batteries in the case that provides more run time than the alkalines and the usual lithium advantages (no self-discharge, light-weight, many charge cycles).

Didn't you post some comps of the Aerco vs. the V3 a few years ago?

acidjack and aaronji,

Thank you for the update!!!  That's fantastic news.  I have to send in my Aerco into Jerry tomorrow anyways.  I have a faulty external DC jack that needs to be replaced.  I'm gonna ask him to do the mod too.  Woot!

Question:

Does replacing the 3 alkaline batteries with 2 helicopter batteries free up space inside?  It was always snug inside there with 3 alkalines.  Just curious on the size of the helocopter bats.

We did extensive comps between the Aerco and the V3 a few years ago, and a majority of us here at TS disagree with the above statement.  You're entitled to your opinion.  It's a free world.   ;)

Congrats on your upgrade!  Regarding the space issue, I have no idea... I'd just guess the helicopter batteries are bigger, but I don't really know...
