Title: "C4's > W+mod UA5" or "C4's > T+mod UA5" ? Which would you prefer?
Post by: leshlush on February 24, 2006, 02:11:44 PM
I'm just looking for some feedback on  "C4's > W+mod UA5"  or "C4's > T+mod UA5" ???

I know it would only be opinion (or preference) based, but I just wanted to see what people had to say about which moded UA5 makes for a better combo w/ the C4s...

I'm currently running a set of C4s and am I looking at investing in a UA5 this April, I was just looking for some feedback...

Thanks Folks

I dug my C4's with the Pmod UA-5.  Some of the shows are up on the archive if you're interested.  Use the link in my signature line to see my recordings on the LMA.  I'd suggest the John Butler, Particle, and Donavon (Austin) shows.

I used C-4's with a Mini-Me and thought that it was a good, but not great combination.
Some would say the Mini-Me's sound is similair to the P-mod UA-5.
I haven't heard enough P-mod recordings to have an opinion.
Though I haven't heard the C-4> T-mod combo, I'd be afraid that the T-mod might reveal the limitations of the C-4's. Check it out yourself, I'm sure there are some recordings with that combination available.
As thegreatgumbino suggested, check out his sources and some of the other combinations to get an idea of how things will sound.

I had been leaning towards the warm mod as my taste is usually for something a little warmer and a little thicker on the bass-end but there seems to have been a bit of T+mod fluffing these days and I was thinking that I'd see what folks had to say...

What I just started thinking was that depending on what mic's I go to in the future, the warm-mod may not work well as a good combo(possibly even a touch muddy), but no matter what mics I choose to move to, the T+mod will always just reinforce the sound of those mics...

Am I wrong in assuming so???

Then again, my main goal is to find something that works best for the meantime as I have no intention of changing mics anytime soon... And as far as I can tell, I've been sorting of leaning towards the W+

Just thought I would ask for some feedback to see where others stood...

I've already heard a few pulls w/ each combo but I've never heard any side-by-side comparisons of same show, same venue, same mic location, same configuration...

Thx again folks

I've ran my c4's with my t+ and wmod and I thought both sounded good. I even d/led some pmod sources and i thought they sounded good too. the only substantial difference that I thought stood out was the cymbals/kit, they were really emphasized (in a pleasing way) with the t+.

never ran the c4s with either but i always thought my tapes could benefit from each.

i think the warmth would sound really good with the c4s but also think that the t+ mod would add more detail which I felt the c4s could use a little more of as well. i really think you couldn't go wrong either way.

have you checked the oade site for the c4 comps or archive.org for some shows?

I like them better with the W+ (but not by much - both those boxes are terrific...).  I think (especially the card caps) the C4 sometimes is a little thin in the bass, and the warm mod brings it out a little better.  I listened to the samples on Oade's site and used them to make my decision and then bought the W+.  I never regretted that decision one bit.

i'm gonna throw a vote over to the way of the c-4>p-mod+ combo

it's already been mentioned, but your should stream/listen a few of these combos from the archive.
With everyone leaning in all different directions here it can't be much help for you. so let your ears make the decision  ;)

I would go T+ mod w/ my c'4's because I already like the bass and low end but I don't like the details and the lhighs. I am still thinkin' of goin' c4's>silver clad>UA5(T+)>NJB3 instead of getin' new mics since the hypers might be comin' soon.
Peace

I tend to prefer the high end.  Bass generally tends to take care of it's self.  Highs always seem to be tougher to catch since they fall off faster.  I think that the C4s do a good job for the $$ I certainly like mine....
