question about church preamp 9100
« on: March 23, 2011, 06:54:30 AM »
hi

I recently got the preamp church audio 9100 and I´ve got a doubt :

I used to tape whit a himd sony mzrh10 +ca11 + sound pro preamp
I did really good recordings whit this equipment.

whit the sound pro preamp I used it that way:

set the recording level in the recorder to the maximum(for the best overall dynamic range and the lowest signal to noise ratio) and control the level from the knob in the preamp

MY QUESTION IS:

WHIT THE 9100 I SHOULD DO THE SAME,OR TO TAKE AS MAXIMUM GAIN FROM THE 9100 AND CONTROL THE LEVEL ACCORDINGLY FROM THE RECORDER???

ANY TIP WILL BE WELCOME
THANKS

I believe you need to find the unity gain on your recorder and then use as much gain from the 9100 as possible.

For example, I have a Sony PCM-M10 and I usually set the recorder to around 4.5 - 5 and then I adjust the gain accordingly on the 9100 (usually about 2 - 3 O'Clock or so depending on the loudness of different venues).

Hope that helps...

many thanks

I did a test in a room whit a really loud volumen.
I put the knob of the 9100 up untill it started to clip(about 1 o´clock)
then I adjusted the gain in the recorder
the recording was great!!!!

so I think the main thing is, to get as maximum volumen from the preamp as possible without clipping

Get all your gain from the pre. That's why you have it.  :)
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

I know. but if I get all the gain from the pre(knob at full in a loud show) the red light clipps
so as much gain from the pre as I can without clipping, because, if the red light clipps the recording can be distorted

Ah, well turn it up as much as you can without clipping.  You must tape some really loud shows. I can't get my 9100 to clip.
