iRiver Car Charger?
« on: April 07, 2010, 02:30:50 PM »
I picked up a cigarette lighter power adapter from Radio Shack with switchable ouput voltage levels (3.0, 4.5, 6.0, 7.5, 9 or 12V DC). The iRiver takes 5V, but there is no 5V option. The guy there said I could use the 6V setting with no problems. He said only one volt off wont hurt anything. Wondering if any of you electronic savy folks could confirm this, or advise against it...

thanks!

You should be fine at 6v.  I run my 6v V3 off a 9v DVD battery and it hasn't blow up yet  ;D

I agree that 6v will probably work, but maybe try 4.5 v first?

I fried (2) H320's on 6v... (that recorder is very picky about power)

I wouldn't chance my iRiver to 6V.  Maybe it works, but many iRivers have been fried from using the wrong power supply, and I intend to make sure mine doesn't join that pile.

I have a device which you plug into your car's cigarette lighter, and it exposes a standard USB jack like on a computer, which is 5V.  I don't know where I got it, someplace on the internet for about $3.  Then I have a homemade cable where I cut off a USB cable and soldered on a iRiver sized plug, and it works fine.  I can't tell you how much charging power it puts out for sure.  I typically record to an H120 (or Korg MR1), and at the end of the night the battery is running low.  I use this thing to power the iRiver so I can listen to the show on the way home without the battery dying.  I've used it more for my Korg MR1 than I have my H120, but I'm pretty I have used it for the H120.

Actually, you could use is a MODIFIED Nokia phone charger.  The polarity of a stock charger is reversed and will fry your iRiver, but cut the cable, swap the wires, and you are golden.  There are a ton of those kicking around in people's junk drawers.
