TLs -> m148 -> w-mod ua-5??
« on: April 15, 2004, 07:46:06 AM »
I'm eyeballing the m148 in the yard sale wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this setup?

Would I be better off with the TLs just selling the ua-5 and getting a V3?

don't the w/p mods disable the front line inputs on the UA-5?

i'm not sure about that luvean, they may be disabled.... but if they aren't - understand the warm mod is in the preamp section - so you'll basically be running a TL > m148 > digimod ua-5 and have wasted the $ on the w-mod upgrade.

In response to In response to 0

           The RCA inputs do benefit from the MOD, but there is still one stock Op Amp in circuit with the RCA path, still the most critical ones have been replaced. It should be easy to hear , still the best way to know !

I really like the TL>v3 combo, but I kept my wmod and still use it occationally for recording bands that have crappy thin or harsh sounding PA systems.  The wmod gives a punchy fuller sound that is sometimes more desireable than the clarity/detail of the v3.

I say go for the m148>wmod.  Its a combo no one has tried and may sound great.  You may still be able to run through the front xlr's and take full advantage of the mod.  If you don't like it, sell both the m148 & wmod and get a v3.

Craig.

I was thinking of running to the xlr in's on the ua-5 to fine tune the gain.  I'm just not sure if the ua-5 pres are quality enough to run after the 148.....though I guess I can fine tune running RCA in as well...can't I?

as much as I like the ua-5, no way the pre should be run behind the m148. Bri, I think you're really looking at selling the ua-5 and putting that cash into a mod sbm1 or,  :o an ad500 or 1000. That said, the TL has the color to sound really good with the v3, imo. I have some tapes, and really like them. sure would be an easy, hassle free rig to run, too, unlike m148>mme, and wouldn't explode like 148>500,1000. Imo.

I've always wanted a brick though.....and I'm not sure the sbm-1 would be right with the TLs and the 148.........TL->m148->ad2k would be pretty sweet! :P  Not gonna happen for me anytime soon though!

TL->m148->ad2k

How would you adjust the gain with this rig though?

You'd probably be forced to run through the ua5's rca's.  I remember running v2>ua5 via the xlr mic pre inputs a few times and having to keep the v2 pretty low to keep from overloading.  The main question then is how good is the ua5's a/d?  I think it's good.  I hate to lead someone astray, but I'd like to hear it.

I split the signal out of my PSP-2 at a show last year, and it seemed to me like I liked the 16 bit ad500 tapes better than the 24/48 UA-5 tapes.  The UA-5's AD stage seemed a little too "electronic" for me, which is part of what turned me off of that box.  For the money, though, it's can't be beat (although you could probably have mp2>ad500 for what the wmod costs, since the bottom's falling out of the used market) YMMV.

re: 16bit ad500 vs. 24bit ua5

were you comparing the 24bit ua5 source, or a dithered/resampled version of it?  I never had the opportunity to compare those 2 a/d's since by the time I had a ua5, my ad500e had been replaced by a mod-sbm1.

DOh!

The more I think about it the better more sense a V3 would make.
