T-amp recommendations?
« on: July 08, 2011, 01:04:59 AM »

Hey TS!

I'm in the market for a small amp in the 50w range.
I've got a pair of Premier Acoustic PA-4.2 monitors I'd like to connect with my turntable set-up.
They are 8ohm impedance, 50-175 w, 88db sensitivity, response of 65Hz-20KHz..

I've spotted 2 on ebay that look alright but I cant find much info or reviews..

it's probably below your wattage range, but I just ordered the topping TP-30 for 90USD. it's 15watts a channel. I can report back about it once I get it. It's the model with USB connectivity.

I've got my eye on it.
That and the TP-41 I'm most likely to pull the trigger on.
They are both the same with two exceptions:
TP-41 is 5w more per channel.
Also has 2 RCA inputs, the 30 has 1 plus USB.
Otherwise, same headphone amps, Op amps etc.

Cheers!

I've heard better things about Topping's quality control as opposed to Dayton.

I know the Dayton DTA-50 uses a cheap opamp solution for the headphone amp.  I was expecting an attenuator on the main output.  That would sound better, I think.  And, yes, I had quality control issues on my Dayton rig.

If anyone finds another source of the 2050 (?) Tripath chip, with or without USB, that would be great.  Also information on the Headphone out and USB CODEC (if present)  would be useful.

Please DO NOT mail me with tech questions.  I will try to answer in the forums when I get a chance.  Thanks.

I'd love to hear what you think of the TP-30 once you receive it. It seems like it might be a good, affordable way to get a DAC, T amp and headphone amp. I know the reviews say the headphone amp is alright and DAC is decent but it seems like a good place to start since I don't have anything at the moment to run my ATH-50s.

I just ordered a used pair of HD280's from someone in the yardsale, I am really excited to hear how they sound with the headphone out. and also with my bose interadio SA-200's. THey have 5 inch woofers and are rated 10-75 watts, so I am thinking it should be enough power. I have a decent onkyo receiver with a lot more power anyways that they sound good with. This T amp will get ride of my 25 dollar behringer usb device that makes lots of noise.

I ordered it for 90 dollars, with free shipping, from hifidiyshop.com, based in china. http://www.hifidiyshop.com/topping-tp30-class-t-digital-amplifier-usb-dac-ta2024_p221.html Ordered just over a week ago, expecting 2-3 weeks total, although they say 7-10 days. just seems really far away from maine. I will update once I have received it.

Got the TP41 today..

they sent me a 220v model...... Any idea if there could be a possibility of running this on DC?
Or should I just mail it back to China?

Got the TP-30 this morning, exactly 2 weeks after ordering. not bad.

Seems great so far! I opened it up, all the parts seemed to be soldered well as far as I can tell. I've only tested them so far with my "interaudio by bose" 10-75 watt speakers. plenty of power for these guys, even with the advertised 10w power at 8 ohm. I first hooked up an i-pod using the aux in, sounded just fine. Than came the USB, it sounds even cleaner and tighter, and it supports kernel streaming in foobar, a great plus!

I'll report on the sound of my in-the-mail HD280 pro's when I get those. Very pleased with this amp so far. It has a nice expensive feel, and a thick machined front plate. the switches feel nice and solid too.

EDIT: got the HD280's today, and with that I think I am getting an idea as to the sound of (more) high quality components. my first impression was the clarity and crispness of the low end. I've only owned sub-50 dollar headphones before these guys, so I guess I was accustomed to muddy sounding bass. The other impression I had was the "cleanness" of the higher frequencies. I guess I am beginning to understand what a "flat response" means.
