"SDHC cards aren't backwards compatible, so it looks like we'll have to stick with classic SD cards for our Treos and cameras"

Hopefully Edirol/Roland updates the firmware

The SDHC card looks the same as the standard SD card.  But
SDHC cards are designed to work only in SDHC host devices.
They can't be used in host devices designed for SD (like the R-09).

However, standard SD cards do work in SDHC hosts.  So your
SD memory cards will still work with future recorders built to the
SDHC standard.

So what about the 4GB SD card from e.g. Transcend?
Ar they SDHC?

Nope, the Transcend 4GB is a "standard" SD card.
Since the SD card design specs don't include 4GB,
Transcend and others that make 4GB cards are out
of spec.   This explains why we see messages like
"4GB SD card from vendor X worked, but vendor Y's
card did not."  They implement support for 4GB in
different ways.

We're in a transition period from SD to SDHC.  It
won't be long before recorders and digital cameras
will switch to SDHC.  Some video camcorders have
already made the switch (goodbye Mini-DV).

So can the R09 be made SDHC-compatible in software?

VERY interesting information, indeed.  I thought according to the post by Frank from cascademedia.net, and from the word he got from Roland, that the R-09 would probably work with the SDHC memory cards.  Quote (from the correspondence that Frank quoted):

Quote
*********************************************************************************

At this moment, there is a standardized SD directory regulation that limits the SD card capacity to 2GB. Some card manufacturers have bypassed this standard and have attempted to make 4GB cards with mixed results among SD related devices.

But, there is a new, expanded regulation that is being tested by the SD Card Association (yes, there is such an organization!) called "SDHC", that will allow 4GB (and larger) memory sizes on SD cards. At this time, only one SD card manufacturer has released an SD card in this SDHC format, and it is still being tested. (...Panasonic)

When this new standard is set in stone and more card manufacturers begin releasing such cards, the Edirol engineers will test and update the R-09 software in an attempt to be fully compatible with the larger card format.

NOTE: If and when the R-09 can be updated, users will have to update the firmware in the R-09 to add compatibility with the larger card format. This will be easily done via a firmware download from our website, transfer of the data to a formatted SD card, and a reboot while holding a certain combination of buttons on the R-09. It is a very quick procedure.

****************************************************************************

I will not be surprised if the R-09 does *not* work with SDHC memory. But it would be nice if the R-09 *did* work with SDHC memory with a firmware upgrade...

Even though the R-09 may not work with SDHC cards, couldn't Roland still update the firmaware to support regualr 4GB SD cards?

That's what someone in another thread reported having discussed with Roland directly.  I think it is the announcment R-09 thread the Sound Professionals guy said his Roland contacts said Julyish.  Said within 2 months new firmware with support.

This is interesting...
http://www.pretec.com/epages/Store.storefront/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Store.Pretec/Products/%22News-Aug.%2031%2C%202006%22

In checking the compatibility list I see a number of older pocket pc's which are listed. H5500, H2210, and even an older 3850.
How can that be? The bottom of this article mentions "SD-Tuner". I wonder if this is a utility that allows you to use the chip in older systems?

A couple of digital camera manufacturers recently introduced firmware updates
that allow the use of SDHC cards in their formerly SD-only cameras.
So it appears that there is no physical barrier to using SDHC cards
in a recorder like the R-09, just the firmware.

If and when Edirol/Roland updates the firmware of the R-09 to
work with the SDHC cards, it will include the ability to format cards
up to 32GB (the current maximum in the SDHC spec).

BIG +T. That is good news. From what I had read here, and at an article someone from here had linked, I had thought the SDHC cards were possibly physically different than standard SD cards.

Having said that, as Nick Graham mentioned in another R-09/4GB card thread, a firmware update could potentially be a bad thing if it means no more continuous 4GB .WAV files. (Good thinking, Nick. That thought never crossed my mind before reading your post.)

SDHC as I understand it basically is specs about the minimum speed of the cards.  Some SD cards are too slow to record digital video in solid state camcorders, so the idea of SDHC is to make certified cards that are guaranteed to be fast enough for video recording.  It's not an issue with audio recorders and still digicams, which can work fine with comparatively slow cards.  4GB cards appear to work fine in many PDA's and digicams so Edirol shouldn't need to delay.

Pretec is not the first with 8GB SD cards.  Samsung has had them for months and there is a guy on ebay who has been selling them for around $180-200 a pop.  He has also had some 16GB CF cards for around $380 but hasn't offered those in a while.  I want one of those :)
