Cards or omnis from an arena floor
« on: December 08, 2011, 03:51:40 AM »
I'm taping in an arena tonight. I've got ca-14 omnis and SP-cmc-4u cards. I've used the cards when taping from seats in arenas and got good results, but as I've only had them a couple of weeks I've never used them when taping from an arena floor. I'm just looking for some advice from tapers who've used both when taping from an arena floor. What concerns me with the cards is phasing with being do many people in front of me. They will be collar mounted too. Thanks.

This sounds like a boomy situation, so I'd use the cards to get rid of the echoes.
I'd try to mount them upper than collar-level.

Omni's only if you are very close to one of the line arrays.  Other than that, cards would be best and wear them as high as you can.

Omni's far from the sound source are going to pick up the boomy acoustics of a very large room plus all the chatter around you.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

I just got my CA-14 cards today from Chris and am not sure which to use for t'row nights show in Jim Thorpe. It's @ The Mauch Chunk Opera House 5th row dead center. I don't have any complaints about the CA-14 omni's. If it comes out too boomy I just turn down the bass knob. I would like to know which will result in a better recording in your opinion. I wish I had another recorder otherwise I would just run 2 rigs.

If it occurred to you to run omnis, go for it! Get there early, find the sweet spot on the floor, clip the mics as high as you can, and you will pull the heat!!

I got great results doing stack taping with cardioids. Both arenas had a mono mix (same sound from both left and right).
