not getting a sigal from the third mic
« on: October 01, 2003, 08:37:57 PM »
hey all lookin fer some help here...

Im at home trying t test out a 3 mic mix with the Ua5 and am having horrible results with the third mic.

here is what I gots....

2 b2 pros (LD's) going into the front and one oktava> 48v phantom power> XLR to RCA into the back. no signal to faint readings when I tap on the mic.

So I test the external phantom power by shutting off the phantom on the UA-5 and go from my external  phantom unit into just the pre's on the front. Bingo I get signal. obviously this is a gain or pre issue. ok then...

for shits and giggles i take my sound pros battery box and use that as my pre into the back... no dice. what is my issue? Am i not cool enough? I have hear of people doing a 3 mic mix with out an external pre with the Ua-5 why can't I?
:(

Think you were right on the gain call.  The back is line level - you'll need a pre with gain if you want to get there.

Stolen from the oade board...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, here is the run down, part #'s included from RS

I was a little sauced when I got home so......

2 Nak CM100>CP1 Cards/ 1CM300>CP4 Shotgun>pmoded UA5>D8

Mic's set at DIN, 17cm, gun clamped to my vert bar, right in the
middle, around 9'. DFC about 20 -25' back. There was no SB to be
seen, it actually was behind a wall?

This is what I needed.......

Matching Transformer, XLR>1/4" male MONO, #274-016
1/4" Dual coupler(F 1/4" on both ends) #274-1556
1/4" MONO Y cable #420-2545
2 phono-phono adapters #247-0863
I am transfering right now....

So, the 2 100's going to my XLR inputs, and the 300 going to the
RCA's.

I can't believe how good this sounds! Truely the best tape I have
made to date!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So is it the line transformers that I need? I thought that I would be fine with my hosa XLR>RCA converter
the show is over go home please.

again, i have no experience with this personally, but from what i've read and the confirmation i'm getting from the talented dklein, it is the line transformer that will bring your mic input up to a line level, which is what the rca's are for.

Excuse my ignorance, but:

1. What does the 3rd mic add?
2. Is it mixed mono into the stereo signal provided by the mics going into the XLR inputs?

I'm off to Guitar Center and then on to Denver to tape My Morning Jacket (both Instore and Concert). I might pick up an extra pair of the MC012's while I'm there. Then I would have a 3rd and 4th mic! I'd certainly be into trying something new (especially if it will make my recordings sound better).

PS. Listening to Mogwai someone taped from the other night. The source is: Oktava MC 012 (hyper-cardioid) > Denecke PS-2 > Marantz PMD670. Fucking great recording. I think I got it BT from sharingthegrove.com. Check it out.
