Title: M-Audio MobilePre USB
Post by: RJPass on April 23, 2004, 05:39:47 PM
Nevermind which mic's im going to be using, as i'll get them later but i wanted to know if this was a good pre-amp for Laptop Based recording.  I dont need anything fancy, just a preamp to power the mics/transfer to laptop.

Here's the link:
http://www.core-sound.com/mobilepre-usb.html (http://www.core-sound.com/mobilepre-usb.html)

I ask because they retail for $150, Core Sounds has it a few bucks cheaper, and where i work, i can get a nice employee discount on it.  Didnt know we carried it until i saw it, so if i can get it really cheap (Half off cheap), i wanna just buy it.

What do you think?

I think for $70 you can do a whole lot worse!  I've never heard this box, but the MAudio Duo didn't impress me.  I noticed this one pulls power from the USB - I hope you're laptop has enough juice to last through a full show.  Probably not a bad intro to taping if you've never run gear before.  Pick it up, run it for awhile, get your feet wet, then decide if you like taping enough to throw more $$ into it.

Well, im currently a MD taper, and i wanted to experiement with the laptop.  My feet have been wet for a while  hehe

I just wanted to see whats up.  Im well aware it draws power from USB but the shows i'd be doing on laptop wouldnt last more than 30 mins anyway, because they'd be done at small clubs for local bands and such.

Thanx!

Well, you'll as least take a step up from MD to DAT quality (16bit), but you could spend a little more and get a UA5 that can do 24bit and likely has better mic preamps.  Just like every hobby, "if you spend a little more you can get X..."  :)

If you end up getting one, I'd be interested to see how it works out for you.  I have a couple of music teachers who want to record their students and it might be just the ticket.

you guys are unbelieve able.  i ask for an opinion about one product, and it's turned into a whole praise the ua-5.  i know what it's capeable of, i just asked if the model i specified was good because the price is cheap.  That's all im asking.  Im also well aware if you pay more you get more and it's better than the less expensive one, but i wanna know how this one works.  not im comparison to anything, if anyone knows how it works, can i get a review here please?

Sorry for sounding harsh, but shit man.  If i had the money, my first choice would be the ua-5, but i dont, so it's not.  sooner you guys get over that, the better responses i'll get in here!  =)

That's completely understandable, but the point of the thread was to ask if anyone had heard it at all, and it just turned out to be the opposite you know.....  "yeah yeah, the ua-5 beats the shit outa it though!!!"  and they havnt heard it yet

capiche?  =)

uh yeah capiche. so buy a maudio usbpre and tell us how it sounds! i searched this and oade's forum and couldn't find anything besides this thread. be our guinea pig.....it just might be better than the UA5!!!! nobody will know unless they run it and tell us how it sounds or posts samples.

once again sorry for even mentioning the ua5....

i would say that for 135$ for a all in one box, you cant go wrong

im running another m-audio product (firewire 410) and have no complaints, but it is about 3 times the price

Hey now...have you looked at the Tascam US-122...I'll admit I haven't heard/seen the MobilePre...but I was pretty happy with my results with the US-122...in any case, i've since upgraded to the FW410...so I have the US-122 lying around gathering dust.....you're free to check it out if you like...just let me know..

wow, didnt realize there was anyone else here beside me and john kelley running the 410 as anything except a way to do 24/96 with thier laptop from another pre/ad

Yup...I don't post often...but i've been running the 410 for a few months now..it' s been quite solid for me...I run Audix SCX-one > 410 > Dell X200 w/ Samplitude 7...sounds good to my ears, and the price was right for a poor college student.....

the price is definantly right

i ran mine in the field for the first time last night, did a few comps, running 24/96 one set and 24/48 one set

overall i think my first recording sounds great, and this thing is a tank.... probably the most solid pre/ad box ive ever owned, as ive never had a v2/v3

and it is so stable doing 24/96 over firewire... i love it

I bought one of those mobilpre’s today. I figured it was cheap and I really do not do that much laptop recording so I really did not want to dump the money on the 410 if I didn’t need to right away. I am going to give it its first run tomorrow night. I will let you guys know how it sounds. I will probably put the show (Signal Path) on archive and just post the address. Or I could do a private bit torrent thing if anyone is interested. I will be running it with wavelab. So far all I really have to say is it is very easy to use and setup. It sounds pretty good on the tests I ran today but I really will not know until I run it in the field. If it turns out to suck (I do not think it will be that bad) I can always return it and get a credit toward a 410.  :)
