Brian,
I read the reviews of that product. No direct experience, but 1 of three reviews says it worked for 1 minute before breaking. He probably tried charging something which required more than 12V.
that said:
What are you trying to power with this? If it is microphones-NO- if it is almost anything else, that may be the deciding factor. as in anything without a huge surge potential (ie printers, vacuums, de-humidifiers surge heavily on start up) should be able to be powered by this thing.

Finally, if it is microphones, kindms gave me this power transformer type box with XLR in/outs which I think steps down, but I will check it tonight.

Nothing for me in particular,.....I see it provides up to 2a of power. I read the reviews too... they look interesting.

It's max current is 2A - it doesn't provide 2A of power - take all these Chinese no-name goods with a grain of salt.

So if the input is rated at 2A @ 5v the output = 10W input (typical max for USB)

assuming a good efficiency across the step up circuit at 85%

total Watts out would be 8.5

at 9v expect no more then 8.5 / 9 = 0.94444 Amps out
at 12v expect no more then 8.5 / 12 = 0.70333 Amps out

Also the circuit would potentially add noise to the power line so take that into consideration as well - depending on your gear on the other end it may become audible

fantastic points here and I think reasonable calculations.

Let me just re-frame it in terms of MilliAmp draw by moving the decimal point and adding the letter m ...

Quote
at 9v expect no more then 8.5 / 9 = 944.44 mAmps out
at 12v expect no more then 8.5 / 12 = 703.33 mAmps out

Many thanks for the info!

I did buy a 5v to 6v one to try out with the M50.....Will let you know when I get it.  I believe it draws 1A which based on the math may work....

I was thinking about getting one of these up converters to use my 5V batteries with my Aerco that requires at least 7V. Some of the inexpensive ones have a switch for 9 or 12V. Wonder if I should just suck it up and get a 7.2 or 9V battery.
