Title: KCY (5-pin) and TB (6-pin) compatibility
Post by: thunderbolt on May 27, 2013, 10:12:07 AM
I have a TB 2.2 with a 6-pin binder input.  Thinking about a KCY, which is 5-pin.  Is there an adaptor available, or would I have to start over with a 5-pin TB?

Probably not, but what's the current powering configuration of your TB? 9v PIP? 48v phantom? Knowing what microphones you are currently using it with would probably answer that question, if you're unsure.

Perhaps there is a chance Jon could modify your existing TB and make a TA6F > 5-Pin Binder adapter cable, but then it likely won't work with whatever your current setup is.

It depends on your voltage pin outs, but I do this. One of my TB's puts out ~8v on the low volt pin so with an adapter cable Jon made for me it works great to a KCY. Ask him about it. It's not just a cable, there's a resistor or something added, but fairly simple. If your voltage isn't compatible you migh need a mod to tb but I'd stick with 6pin for the options it gives you.

I can still do P48 with it as well.

My TB 2.2 can provide 16V or 48V phantom.  Would be using this with Schoeps Mk. 5 or Mk. 21 caps.  It was originally set up for AKG480.  Would be nice to get an adaptor cable vs. a new box, since it would allow for flexibility.  Thanks!

My littlebox provides the full 60v the schoeps need. So YMMV.

My other one is like that and I don't believe it will work with Schoeps but works with my akg actives and mics which will accept less than 48v phantom. I guess the adapter cable sums the voltages to get Schoeps compatible value so the math doesn't work on this one.
jon explained it to me (probably for the second or third time). There's a resistor outside the Shoeps capsule that you need so he squeezes it into the mini-xlr.

I would consider getting it modified and get an adapter cable at the same time. You can still run 480s or others off of P48. Of course if you never want to do anything but KCY then maybe changing out connector and making it dedicated KCY will make sense. I'm going to get cmc6's someday and i have other p48 mics so keeping p48 is important to me.

The best thing to do is send Jon an email and ask some questions.
