Considerations on re-cabling 007 AT853s
« on: May 08, 2018, 10:10:20 PM »

I inherited a set of AT853 mics + specialty battery box that will power the mics via a single 3-pin xlr.  (illconditioned design?)  There is about 4 inches of cable from the split/dovetail to each capsule...  I have run the mics in this configuration (open) a few times and gotten great sounding results - but they don't work well for me or how I typically would wear them as cabled.

Is it possible to add cable-length to the relatively short length available?

If lengthening cables - would adding interconnects in between the mics & battery box be possible?
  • Would this setup add too much resistance to continue to be useful? (or multiple points of failure to induce interference)
I never was one who spent a ton of time paying attention in Chemistry or Earth Sciences classes... Is there any benefit to silver over copper wire when passing through large powered magnets (or handheld powered magnets)?

Anyone want to volunteer themselves for this kind of work?

TIA!

...potato mic pics...

Darktrain is definitely someone I had in mind for these modifications.  I guess feasibility is not a question then.   ;D

That's not my work.

Mine will have hot melt glue and gaffers' tape on it, lol.

As far as re-wiring, it can all be done.  You can re-wire right to the capsules if you like.

Good luck getting these fixed...

Please DO NOT mail me with tech questions.  I will try to answer in the forums when I get a chance.  Thanks.

Howdy Richard!

I think this box was made by 'Fozzy' on a circuit you designed.  I have(had?) a schematic of the resistors/etc somewhere...  These mics work great - I just look goofy in a kangol.

Would adding mini-xlrs or other interconnects between the mics & the splice cause any issues?  I was thinking mini-xlrs as I could also run them with my tinybox if desired.

Either way, the design on this box is great!

Thanks!
