Does LMA still requires disc #s?
« on: January 08, 2015, 02:42:30 PM »
Hey guys,

Taped my first show in 5 years a couple weekends ago (Grand Theft Bus).
Remembereing the post-processing workflow was a pain.

I was about to upload it to the archive without disc numbers (ie. gtb2014-12-19t01) cause I thought very few people would still be burning these tunes to CDRs.  The archive/etreee naming standards still seem to suggest disc numbers:
http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=NamingStandards

Anyone know what I should do?
Thanks

It will be fine without disc numbers. I haven't upped a show with disc numbers in the filename since 2009.

You're right.  Discs are a thing of the past.  As a courtest to downloaders, I still upload my files in 16/44.1 along with my own standard 24/48 format files.  The smaller files generally get more downloads for whatever reason, but I don't necessarily think it's because people are burning CDRs.

But disc number is optional nowadays.  The naming standard you use is pretty standard nowadays, although alot of us put the gear we used in between the date and the track number.  For example, my last show starts with the first track...lotus2014-12-30.m934b.cmmt30.psp3.d100.16bit-t01 and some people will follow that up with the track title...lotus2014-12-30.m934b.cmmt30.psp3.d100.16bit-t01_umbilical_moonrise.

I don't use disc numbers at all.

Also, awesome news that you recorded the Bus and will be posting it. I assume it was something from the Christmas run? The Saint John show was a lot of fun, if a little messy.

Looking forward to hearing it.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Hey Colin,
Yeah it was from the Xmas run...the Moncton show.  Should have it up tomorrow once I get a couple missing track names from Tim.

I'm not sure if we've met before...My wife and I have been fuckin around up north for a few years.
I'm guessing we're the only NB tapers?
If I see you running your rig at a show, I'll introduce myself.

I'm just glad that SOMEONE still uses the etree naming standards. I DL/Stream a TON of the recordings posted in the Kickdown just to listen to different sources, and youd be shocked at how many tapers DON'T use the etree naming standards. Drives me FN BONKERS :P is it really that hard to follow their standards? Not IMO!!! We should just tell new tapers THAT before anything else, whether they actually UL them to etree/LMA or not.

Sorry for the minor rant, but that shit drives me nuts! And I also haven't used disc numbers in my filenames in many years, with no ill effect on the LMA/etree ;)

16bit

I stopped using "Disc #" a few years ago.  I use "Set #" now.  It's all about available hard drive space, as opposed to carrying spindles of cds......

Wow, I can't believe I never thought to put source info into the file name, at least which mics I ran
I typically do folders on my desktop with source info in them but I've lost drives before with my source info & my hard disk back ups never had the full source info listed so having it in the file name would have helped. Thanks!
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.
