Festival solution for Sonosax(s)
« on: August 05, 2016, 05:15:59 PM »
OK, I know a lot of us use the Pro-Cell 9V for internals and it was hinted to me NOT to try to run externals since the Sax is picky.

Are there rock solid solutions for long battery runs?  I have 2 of them and would love something solid.

An 18v Tekkeon will work just fine. This excludes the cheap-o mp3300.

Can someone give me a specific model number, or better yet a link?  All the usual places I would look either have the mp3300 (which I know were crap since I had one many moons ago) or don't sell tekkeon at all anymore.  Even some retailer links on tekkeon's website are dead.

Pretty sure tekkeon is no longer in business but you can find the 3300 on eBay.  Best bet is to grab a Naztech pb15000.  Pretty sure it has a tip that will work with the sax.  http://www.rakuten.com/prod/naztech-pb15000-universal-portable-power-bank-via-ergoguys/243386197.html?listingId=527447031&sclid=pla_google_Plutus+Brands&adid=29963&gclid=CMT9xe6_q84CFckkhgodYKwAyA

I will try the Naztech.  Is 18v the magic number?  Is there a voltage +/- variance that I have to work with?

Edit to add from the manual:

7. EXTERNAL POWER
The SONOSAX SX-M2 can also be powered from an external DC source, from 12
to 24 Volts
, via the "DC IN" connector.(Battery powering is automatically disabled
once an external DC source is used.) Once the external power supply is connected,
the SX-M2 may then be operated as when powered by batteries or accumulators. If
the "ON" led flashes normally (every 3 seconds), the external voltage is between 14
to 24 Volts. If it flashes every second, the external voltage is below 14 Volts.
Polarity : + = center, - = outside collar

I don't know if it it is true or not....  but some have claimed that running the SX-M2 with an external battery that is less than 18v (Tekkeon MP3300), will give you less headroom....  I don't know if that is true or not since the manual states 12v-24v.
I have run the SX-M2 with a MP3300 at 14v without issue...  but I can't tell you if I had less headroom.
.....got a blank space where my mind should be.....

Well, I bought the Naztech PB15000 from Amazon for $57 and change.  It came yesterday, I charged it up, figured out what tip fit and it fired right up at 18v.  I'm using this at the Grand Targhee BGF this weekend and will report back on run times.

I am currently looking for a remote powering option for my 2 HD cams (Canon XA10)

Tekkeon's will run the sax forever.  Never had mine die, ever, though I'm not a festva buff (I hit Jam Cruise annualy and that's usually my 1 festival for the year).

I just discovered that at 18v the Naztech introduced noise onto 2 full days worth of CCM4 > Sonosax recordings while powering the Sonosax.  FML.

I thought it was introduced from something else but just isolated it here at home.  Internal alkalines worked fine on Sunday's set.

I just did some testing and if I run the Naztech at 16v, 18v, 19v, 20v or 21v there is interference with the Sonosax.  If I run it as 12v it is fine.
