Does anyone run sbd > pre > recorder?
« on: April 13, 2007, 08:44:56 PM »
Just curious if anyone runs a pre between the soundboard and their recorder. I guess there really isn't a need to do so. I've done many many recordings taking the sbd direct into my R-1 with never a problem. Just wondering if people do this to add some "flavor" to their recording.

I have when I was running UA5 > JB3 .  I have seen numerous SBD > V3 > recorder sources too.  For me it was easier to get the levels dialed is and kep the cabling simple
MK 4V > KCY 250/5 Ig (KS 10I)  > VST62IUg > 722

I used to do the same SBD > UA-5 > JB3. I also found it better to use the UA-5 ADC over that of the JB3.

right on.... yeah, i knew about the phantom clause.

I wanted to clarify, I would be running just a straight up pre, NOT and A/D as those above with the UA-5 rigs. I would be running sbd > apogee mini-mp > in R1.

I've run sbd>MIC2496>Recorder, and have always attenuated because of the ~+15db boost by the Pre.

I think it would still be nicer than the harsh sound you often get from SBD feeds.

When I am running four channel, I wil be running SBD>V3>MT 24/96, synced to the wordclock of the mics>722.  Given the choice between the V3 A/D and the MT, it's a no-brainer.  If I only had a pre, I would still run it before any deck, other than maybe a 722.
4 channel: Neumann TLM-170R>Segue Dogstar>SD 722   2 channel: Neumann TLM-170R>Segue Dogstar>Lunatec V3>SD 722
Linked to Lunatec V3>MT 24/96                                     (Hi-Ho Silver Interconnects)

Yes, I do.   SBD>V3>AES/Coax>P2.  I like the sound of the V3 ADC better than that of the P2.

u cant run run just a pre.  a " regular " pre only takes mic in,  not line in.  ed
???

I think he's referring to mic in vs. line in in the sense of phantom power.  Can't run board > pre w/phantom power on.
