I tried practicing some cable soldering today and realized that the wire stripper I have doesn't seem ideal for the task. What can you guys recommend as a replacement? (The one I have is just some POS I got who-knows-where years ago.)

My Klein has been solid for many years.

When in doubt buy Klein for most hand tools. They are expensive but you wont ever regret it.

Another Klein lover here. And they won't seem expensive at all if you compare them to Wera!

Xcelite has always been an excellent choice for this line of work.

Two options,
One, get a pair similar to this.

I often will knock out the pin for the adjustment cam and go by feel. I do not like the "sized strippers" with different sections for each wire gauge.
Two if you want precision, and don't have the project size to build skills, this greenlee, or similar tool.

General # 68
I've used this for so many years and made so many cables with it. I never got the hang of the fancier strippers.

This is the unit I use, don't know the name anymore, have had it since the mid 80's. Works great, esp. on delicate wires. Anything big I just use standard strippers. Bob

It depends on the wire size and insulation thickness. I have a few different ones to cover 10 AWG down to really small stuff. Bob is right about the pistol grip working well with thin wires. I use the Minim 2.5 on the right for the thin wires in Mogami W2697 and it works great.
