got a few questions on what to do:
   to transfer DAT recordings to my harddrive and I buy a 7 pin how do I use it? or is it better to just plain do it through line in?

where is the best place to buy DAT tapes? in packages?

to transfer dats to your HD digitally, you will need a 7-pin to run a digital signal either on the input or output

once you have that, you will need a software program to capture the dat recording digitally, there are free programs like audacity and cdwave that can record from dat, but do some research on them
there are also nicer editing software programs ala wavelab, sound forge, cool edit pro, samplitude, etc

you will prolly have to tweak your computer to record w/ out droppiung pops/clicks in your recording, playing around w/ the buffers and whatnot too

once it ios transferred onto your HD successfully, if it was recorded in 48k, it has to be resampled to 44.1k for use w/ cd's, then tracked out in cdwave, and if you like, compressed losslessly in SHN or FLAC format;-)

Or if you can find a dirt cheap DDS drive and SCSI cable for your computer, you can transfer your DATs with that. You will need to buy some special software for it though, which adds to the cost. $50 for DAT2WAV and $100 for vDAT. But the end result is that you are keeping transfer hours off of your recording deck, which is good news in my book. Well worth the $200 (hardware and software) investment in my book.

Don't forget the time investment involved in one of those, though...there's no error correction on those decks, so if you get a bad read, you've gotta do some painstaking overlay work to fix it. That plus getting the software to work properly...

Knock on particle board, I haven't had a problem with mine. I bought it with the firmware pre-flashed, that was a bonus. The drive took to vDAT right away, no config issues. And I've only had one DAT not read correctly, but that was because it was sampled in 32Khz for some bizarre reason. Easy fix, I just dubbed it to my standalone CDR deck (it wasn't a very important tape) and EAC'ed what I wanted from it.

I'll rephrase - if you can get a good working DDS drive, it's a great way to go. But I guess they can be problems when they don't work well.

yes, but depending on which model, some last WAY longer than others

i'd ask the seller questions first.  but, these are selling for super cheap.  also, do a search on Delta Dio 2496 or the Audiophile 2496, but if you're looking to do DAT > HDD transfers, 2448 is all you need.

the price is definetly right. but i'd be preaty leary buying a card of any kind on ebay. ther're kinda fragile. audiophile isn't  any more that sb audigy new so why take the chance?
