Car Stereo question
« on: March 19, 2014, 10:03:39 AM »
I'm purchasing this head unit to update my 2002 Land Rover Disco:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KDCX898/Kenwood-Excelon-KDC-X898.html?tp=5684#details-tab

It says it has a 24bit DAC. Does this mean it will play back 24 bit files via the USB port in wav format (this unit does not do flacs or DVDa) or a high res playback device?

Thanks!

from the info on the site looks like wav is limited to 16/44.1

WAV: bit rate of 16-bit w/ sampling rate of 44.1 kHz

That was info in the USB mass storage section.

I saw that. So what does the 24bit DAC do? Upsample? Or maybe I should buy a Pono. Really, it doesn't matter. It's not like the 12 year old speakers in this truck would allow me to hear any difference between 16bit or 24bit. Just curious about the function of the DAC.

my guess is upsample There is some info about it doing just that with mp3 files encoded at low resolutions in the docs
