Static and pops advise
« on: July 13, 2016, 03:18:09 PM »
I recently recorded a band where there were some SBD issues, some static-type sounds and some loud pops.
They are on both the AUD portion and SBD feed of the recording.
It was a bluegrass show so there was no heavy amplification to help mask it.

I was able to reduce them in Audacity but they are still noticeable.
The pops are reduced to where it sounds like someone dropped something on stage and the static was reduced to where it is mild.
Any further reduction resulted in drop-outs so I back it off from there.

My question is... should I leave them in there and document in the notes?
Or use an app better suited to noise reduction to remove them?

If I leave them in and document them, I wanna be careful about not offending the sound guy. He is fairly new to allowing people to tape and it took a couple of times for him to get used to the idea.
It's a great little bar and I'd like to maintain a good relationship.

If I try to remove them, I am concerned about drop-outs or creating artifacts.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Pop and static in aid and pa is almost always a bad cable. If it happens during multiple shows the mention it to house engineer. Otherwise it's likely to be one of the performers cables. Often acoustic pickups can be the problem as the cables are smaller and fragile. Took an upright bass playing friend over a year to get his fixed.

In Audacity, zero in on a bit of static, and use the pencil tool to re-draw the curve smoother there (the"noisey bits" are the ones you want to manipulate....)

Easy to see, just look really close.

Do a few, then listen again to that section, and see if you can put up with the new sound.  If so, keep grinding.....

If not, put that method away and try something else.

I feel your pain, but using this method saved a couple of tapes for me.

Pops are a bit longer duration.  YMMV with this technique.

Depends on if the recording is worth further effort.  Sounds like you've done as much as you can without doing more harm than good.  If the other methods mentioned here go further without causing additional harm, and the ROI isn't a deal killer, go for it.

Fostering a good relationship with him is going to be much more important than any single recording.  Maybe slide him a copy and get his reaction, mentioning your your efforts at mitigating the problems as best you can, and also your concern with not stepping on anyone's toes and keeping everyone happy.  Offer to not upload this one because of these problems if he is uncomfortable about it at all.  That should go a long way towards fostering a good open line of communication and ingratiating yourself with him, and hopefully other tapers he'll interact with in the future as well.[/quote]

Most likely a bad connection.  I'd check the cable that was used.  Cable wiring sometimes breaks.  Cheapo connectors will pop when the cable gets moved or stepped on.  Use a known good cable.

with the problem in SBD and AUD channels, it's most likely a bad cable on stage. Again with a upright bass I'd look tI'd o the pickup cable/connector.

If you make friends with house  engineer,  I'd play them the file, then suggest they test their cables, preferring a tester like the ebtech with a latching light that highlights intermitent failures.

I'm curious how the same posp/static/etc are on BOTH the AUD & SBD ??? That sounds to me like maybe a card issue or something? What gear exactly were you using?

Pop & static from the surmised bad stage cable passed through the SBD, amplified and broadcast by the PA and recorded in the AUD.

The pencil tool in Audacity works great!
Very easy pop on a "pop", find the peak, zoom in, and straighten it out.
So simple!

But much harder on the staticy bits or on a pop that occurs during a musical passage.
Any tricks on those types?

if they are of very short duration, you can cut them out and will not even notice the cut. Save early and often, though

May have just answered my own question.

For the static that's occurring during the music, I keep zooming in until I have the sound fairly isolated, then zoom into just that section.
Then use drop the playback speed until you hear the offending sound, then zoom again.
This worked for me in these instances.

YMMV

Is there a way to use hot keys or such when straightening these sample bits out? Very hard to draw straight lines with a mouse...

What Scoobie said, most likely a bad cable somewhere down the line.  Make sure it is NOT yours!

If you post a link to the raw file here I am sure that someone can run it through a vinyl restoration plugin and remove most of the offensive material in one pass.  iZotope's RX5 Advanced works wonders!  As I have said many times before there is a special place in heaven for iZotope's algorithm-writing engineers.

Sooooo true! I use the iZotope OZone 5 Advanced Plugins with my WL v6.11 and LOVE it ;D Those iZotope guys know what they're doing for sure, and the MBIT+ Dithering scheme is my favorite of all time :) But like rigpimp said, LOTS of options with the iZotope Plugins! I've never used the Vinyl Restoration Plugin[never needed to use it], but its one of MANY preset plugins with the Ozone 5 Advanced that might work for you!

If you need the Ozone 5 Advanced Plugins, send me a PM and I might know the cheapest place to get them online ;)
