"best" C02 box?
« on: August 10, 2005, 07:51:52 PM »
I believe what I need is simply a c02 box for now. Ive been patching for 4 years, first with MD. now with a JB3.  Ive been going either RCA>1/8 or 1/8>1/8. I now want to step up to the optical in, as the JB3 line in is a sensative bitch, and I finally have just a little $ to sink into this. Im thinking I just need a c02 box and  an optical cable. I dont know exactly how to go about getting one. I saw the "Hosa Hosa ODL-276 (S/PDIF coax <-> optical)" in the faq and didnt know if this was the only real option or is this just one of many c02 options? Im looking for battery power, and from what I gather they all run on 9v. batt.  I can get to Sonicsense in denver to pick something up. Im just basically looking for something I can plug into a chain and get an optical to the JB3. I am hoping I can hook up the optical cable and co2 box for around $100.

get the hosa odl-276 from sonic sense and an optical cable from ebay or sound professionals, which sells a nice right angle optical cable for 25 bucks, totalling your bill to less than 100 for sure

the hosa is used cause theyve been proven reliable as hell and are bit-perfect digital format converters

I looked at the hosa site, but I still have a few ?s. It looks like it runs off a 9v batt standard. Power should be as simple as chaging the batt, no mods or funky phantom power. After I get the actual box and the optical cable, do I need another digital cable with a splitter or something? Im thinking a Y connector with a digital cable that will run into the odl-276 from the Y split, and that will leave the signal to pass fully past me AND to me with no loss for others on the Y part that isnt going to me? I guess Im not clear as to exactly all the cabels I would need. Maybe I should put this in the cable section, but I wanted to keep the same thread.

Thanks Bean, for the super fast response.

no problem!

I would go to radio shack and get a small NIMH battery pack w/ charger for about 20 bucks and theres your power for the hosa box, that will power it for a LONG time, the only modding is simply snipping the AC WallWart end and crimp a set of rc battery ends on the other end that way you simply plug the rc ends together to get juice, takes not even 5 mins!

thats still about the 100 range, and maybe spend an extra few dollars on an rca barrel so you can run the splitter on the input so you can have a seperate chain for other patchers! the splitters can be had for a measly 3 bucks or so, just make sure its a rca>rca female>female digital splitter!

what is a c02 box?

I believe the poster is asking generically about digital format converters.  The M-Audio CO2 converts S/PDIF optical to coax and vice versa.  But the Hosa ODL-276 (S/PDIF optical <--> coax) and ODL-312 (AES/EBU <--> S/PDIF optical) have proven more reliable for our purposes.

I believe the odl-312 has always done 24/96 in case anyone is curious.

If I plan on only putting the finished product to cd is the 24 bit going to help in the end? Im using a JB3 and I know I can record in higher than 44.1, but I dont know if it helps when I put it to disc. From what I understand I dont think its going to end up any higher quality if Im going to end up with 16/44.1 as a limitation of the CD. Pleas correct me if Im wrong.

the jb3 CANNOT accurately record 24-bit, YMMV

Ok, got the hosa box on the way, now I need to get an optical cable. Im looking for a right angle one on the jb3 end, but untill I can find one can anyone tell me if something like will work from hosa odl 276>jb3?

http://cgi.ebay.com/3ft-Ultra-High-End-Fusion-Optical-Cable-
NEW_W0QQitemZ5797422961QQcategoryZ14965QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Obviously this dosent have the right angle, and is far from top of the line, but I was wondering if the actual size/connection was the correct type?

Thanks

Thanks. So do I understand it right that the cable would fit fine into the hosa box, but wll not fit the jb3 w/o the adapter? Would it be better to get a cable that is made more for this type of connection that dosent require an adaptor? Im looking at about 100 different cabels for this thing and I cant figure out why one optical cable is better than another.

I didnt want to move it to the cable thread, even though it looks like thats where this post is headed.

you could do that, but then you may not be able to use it with other devices, if neccessary.  if you use the adapters, you have a little more versatility.  some have had problems with their adapters, i have not, and i got mine at the links posted.  really, the cables are the same, it's just the connectors, jacket, and construction that are different, imo
