Attenuator cable and power question
« on: February 21, 2005, 03:59:07 AM »
Hi I bought a attenuator cable (-20db) from Microphone madness to connect between my mics (SP cmc4) and my AD20. My AD20 has built in 9V power to the mics through a minijack. However when I connect the attenuator between the mics and minijack input it seems like I don´t get any power to the mics.

I really don´t want to use a batt.box and the XLRs since I stealth with it and it gets to big that way. Is there a attenuator cable that lets the power through or am i toast ?

This is the one i bought

An AD20 doesn't provide any power to the mics unless you have it modded.
I have the Shure attenuators with XLR plug, but that's less stealthy than your cable. But a batt. box is smaller than an AD20, i always have it with me, and i take the AD20 when i known there's not much security checks.

I think he's saying that he's got the modded one.  Right?

I've always wondered how you would deal with the +17dbs on one of those moded ones...

I can't answer the question though.... sorry...

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I have the modded AD20 with built in power.
I recorded a show the other week that was pretty loud without any problems. I never use the XLRs since open taping isn´t allowed in Sweden so maybe I can ad a second minijack without power and let the XLRs go.

Just a thought.

I think Jon is exactly correct.

Sounds to me as if they have just "moved" the battery box from the outside and to the inside of the AD-20.  If so the levels will be just as troublesome.

ok didn't know thanks

JKlabs is correct.
My "tape" from the other week came out good but a few Dbs louder and it would have distorted, I don´t want to take the chance so that´s why I got the att. cable.

I bet you could fit both a SP-batterybox and attenuators if you let the XLRs go.

What's the story here? Is this some national law, or just the way the labour unions and halls have setup rules?

It´s not a law or anything. If you ask a unsigned band they would probably allow it but no signed band has ever encuraged open taping here. The soundtrack of our lives has a open taping policy in the US but not in Sweden (Where they come from).

Taping of any kind just isn´t permitted. That´s the way it is. It is very rare that bands allow open taping in Europe.
