Title: My CD Player Fried

Apparently my surge protector was past it's shelf life.
We had a day of t-storms, with power outages, then sags.
By the end of the day, my disc player had pooped it's last bit.

Any suggestions for a moderate to high end (not esoteric) player?
Blu-ray & SACD would be desired, but would sacrifice that for CD bliss.
What's out there since Oppo folded?

Is ripping to flac and then playing back via computer or network an option?  With a large CD collection it can be a daunting task, but I got through it by just steadily doing a few a day (and some days much more than just a few).  I'm really glad I did it.

Yeah, I have to think this is the Universe saying "its the 21st century"...

I ripped all my CDs to WAV and MP3 long ago and play them via USB to an Audioengine D1...  Its good enough for my daily listening...

The ripping (thank you EAC) project has been underway.
I still want a player in the rack, for the same reason folks like to unwrap their vinyl and spin it.

What have you been using to name and tag?
I find that to be the biggest time-challenge.
I don't understand why I can't simply feed a .csv or text file with a list of album name & song titles and get output tagged auto-magically.

I bought the Onkyo 7030... 11lbs + isolation, Wolfson DAC, CD only, analog or digi-out and below $150.
I wasn't able to talk myself out of it

This I haven't solved.  I can't remember if EAC did tagging (I know it does naming) because I've been trying to phase out buying physical media altogether.  I do like mp3tag (despite the name, it's not limited to mp3s).  It can do some neat stuff like tag files based on file names, etc.  That said there's still some manual labor involved.

I got a used Denon DVD-3910ci on the cheap - supports SACD/DVD-A/HDCD - sounds great


some people have had issues with the them stopping playing various formats over time - I had this issue and cleaned the lasers with a dry cotton ball and it was fixed.

^ Nice machine, and spare lasers are available if ever needed.

The Onkyo is exactly what I needed and even a bit more than I had expected.
It does not suck and is well built, quiet, and damn heavy for modern electronics. I only wish it handled HD-CD and SACD.
