Or any suggestions on what you like (other mics and pre's; yes i understand its what i like im just looking for pointers)

I've liked the neumann>v3 tapes (incidentally, one of the few neumann combos I can tolerate).

B&K/DPA>V3 smokes in the right spot as well, but is hugely unforgiving I hear...

i don't agree about the "hugely unforgiving" part

i've run 4022 > v3 in horrible rooms and it sounded fine...

I would argue that you upgrade your mics before you make the upgrade to the V3/minime route.  As a current user of the 391(3)'s, I can say that you would probably see minimal benefit from upgrading to the V3 as you would to upgrade your mics first.

I'd have to agree with Nick here.  If you like the 391s, you may wanna look into the 480s.  I know Bean here runs the 480>dmic combo, you may wanna ask to hear some of his tapes.

You will get more of a change in sound by changing mics moreso than pre/ad first.

I agree also, if you h ave $1500 to blow on a V3, sell your mics and throw the money at new mics, that will change your sound way more and ends up being a much better investment.

But for the record, I love the way schoeps sound with the V3 :coolguy:

Another agreed - sell the mics, first put the money towards mics.  I, too, love the Schoeps > V3 combo.

TO MY EARS, the neumann's have a little too much high end presence and are a chubby in the low end (that is, not fat, but lacking definition).  For some reason, I can tolerate them with the V3; I think that the neumanns are colored enough and anything else in the chain just throws the balance outta whack.  Again, that's TO MY EARS, YMMV.

Yeah, I see what you are saying.  My best guess is you like a very transparent mic since you run/ran the 4022's, and if so, the neumann's arent the ones.  What do you think about gefell tapes?

I have pulled some amazing tapes with 4022s>v3.  Phish vegas, sts9,WSP 6-28-03.
Granted I was also using a Benchmark 2402 for the 24/96 recordings, the DAT tapes are phenom.

I do agree with what has been said about investing in new mics first.  It's definitely the best way to improve the sonic qualities.

That 03 Red rocks is a great tape- almost too clear.

You can definately hear that CO wind messing with the highs!  Sounds like I'm right there!

speaking of windscreens, I just ran my 4022's with the DPA screens (thick ones UA0896) at the "dead" last weekend & still had wind problems??? To be honest I don't plan on listening to the tapes anyway but I have used these screens & AKG's at Red Rocks before with out a problem?? WTF is up with that?
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

i personaly love the skm184's with the v3.  very transparent amp and really clear mics, both on high's and low's.  oh well, that's why we all have different rigs.  definitely get the mics before upgrading the pre.

i too have started using the shures, and telluride 2 weeks ago proved it; the king of wind during the afternoons and no problems on the tapes.
