Dead Channel on 722
« on: July 20, 2008, 11:33:28 AM »
Anyone had a channel go on their 722? I think I f'd something up trying to make stub interconnects. Hard to tell exactly what I did because I had already put putty in the end so it's all sealed up. I think the voltage was switched on pins 1 and 2. I'm now getting a bunch of garbage on one channel (poping, hissing, snapping kind of stuff). The other channel is fine. I'm getting a constant 60 volts how I expect now that I made a new cable, but nothing different on the
recorder.

I'm supposed to have left an hour ago to see Petty in Omaha, then DMB on Tuesday, and having no recorder right now sucks... I have a d100 sitting upstairs in a closet, but no pre, so that doesn't do me a whole lot of good.

You get the static on one channel of the 722 only when using the stubbies connectors? or all the time?

Not sure how crossed wires would take a channel out. Are you sure you damage a mic? Try swapping them and see if the static goes with the change.

Also, try recording with nothing plugged in 722 and see if it's still gets the static. Did you accidentillay turn off the phantom on one channel?

Sounds like you have a multimeter.  Just trace continunity ( > ) from pin to pin.  Each xlr has the pin # discribed on them.  It will tell you if they are all routed correctly.  Incorrectly routed pins create all kinds of wackiness.  If wrong, (and both sides are shorties that are epoxied) your screwed and will need to be changed.

I get the static all the time on input 2 now, even without a cable plugged in.  I should say all the time when the pre is on.  I shut the pre off (line in), ran my ipod in and both channels showed nicely on the meters. The mics are fine, I switched them from channel to channel and all is good there when they're on input 1.  I traced the continuity before I plugged them in, but didn't really pay attention to the difference betweenn 1 & 2, I just saw, 1:1 continuity on all of them and thought, cool, now I'll test voltage when they're plugged in.

I think with the multimeter I crossed a few pins not knowing the voltage was mixed.  So I touched 1 & 2, or 2 & 3 with one of the pins, while the voltage was crossed.

What would be the effect of turning phantom on for a line in level input and running mics straight in bypassing the pre?  Would be ok, but quieter?

It sounds like you might have damaged one channel of the internal pre. Do you have any external pre's Can you borrow a pre to run untill you can send the 722 out to be looked at? I don't think your mics will pass any signal without 48v phantom.

I'm headed to a town where I don't know too many folks so the pre might be hard to come by.  I brought a set of interconnects just in case though!

You can turn the phantom on for line in feeds on the 722, just not sure what that would sound like...

Thanks!  +t's when I get to a real computer  :)
