Is it?  You may want to verify that.

By far the best (much better than the PS3) is the Oppo 981HD.  The 980HD is a good second choice.  Check reviews, you won't find a better upscaling unit.

FYI - just verified that the PS3 is NOT region-free for DVD movies.  It is region-free for games, however.

once again - fact checker john is on the case... sorry for the confusion...

(the blu rays can be region free, too - that is where the confusion came from, i have bought several imports that are region free, but they are blu not dvd)

Last summer I bought a Pioneer DV-393-S from Walmart that is region free and thus far will play everything I put in it.
I think the DV-400-K replaced it. The remote looks the same and functions quite well. Like the 393-S it upconverts. Could be worth checking out, especially for the price. Oh and my 393-S will play PAL disc just fine.
