DirecTV and RG59 coax cable
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:59:13 AM »
Thinking of getting Directv.  In looking at the Directv website, it says:

Can I use my existing wiring for DIRECTV?

If the cable in your house is RG 6 coaxial cable, it can connect your DIRECTV Receiver directly to your satellite dish or multi-switch. It is important that your home have RG 6 cable because of the frequency of the digital signals it must carry. If your existing cable has splitters, then it should not be used.

My condo is wired with RG59 but as I look around the internet I am finding instances of people sucessfully using RG59 cable and not switching to RG6.  Apparently the primary difference is that there is more signal loss with the RG59.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this?  Do I have to have a significant run to see a difference between the 6 and the 59?

Also, how about HD?  Will my cable choice matter?

All you can do is try.  It depends on the quality of your RG59 cable, how it is run and how well it is terminated.   i rand my direct TV off of RG6 so no direct experience, but talking with the guys that did my initial install they said it is about 50/50 for most homes.

Jake: What's this?
Elwood: What?
Jake: This car. This stupid car. Where's the Cadillac? The Caddy? Where's the Caddy?
Elwood: The what?
Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.
