willing to shell out $200-300 for a "travel" one, I have a stellar Manfrotto (sp?) for in-state taping, but on the airlines, it's rather bulky (near 4 feet long)
a hard plastic'd be better than aluminum for the legs, for security at 'metal' shows, but not a necessity.

What about a monopod, lets you move around and change positions alot more quick than a tripod.I use a Manfrotto 561bhdv monopod that has a fluid pan tilt head but think it is discontinued, maybe replaced buy a newer one?

I rarely shoot from "in a crowd", much more from seats/balconies that a tripod is much easier to secure to.
I've got some minis, foam pads and zipties that do good in a pinch, but if I have permissions, a nice compact fluid head (or 3) for travel would be ideal.

Excellent, cheap, very smooth fluid tripod head: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008AGMNOM
Beats "big brand name" heads costing 5x this much.
Throw it on any sticks or mount that you like/can afford.
