Title: Naiant or similar European supplier - phantom power adaptor.
Post by: caitjim on October 31, 2018, 03:35:07 PM
Ive got back into recording after a 25 plus year gap with a Tascam DR-40 and have eventually decided on a pair of CA-14 cards which are en route from US. Rather than a battery box I had decided (after advice on a previous post of mine) to go for a PFA phantom power adaptor from Naiant to enable me to use the CA-14s without frying them. Naiant have just replied to me with a price but informed me they don't post to Europe. Any ideas? Anyone know of a Europe supplier of the same sort of piece of kit? Thanks in advance.

I'm sure a member here will mail you the gear.  I'd volunteer but Canada Post is terrible (service and pricing)

You can use Audio Technica at8533x phantom adapters/power modules. There are some in the yard sale that a cable builder has and im sure he can make what you need.

Honestly i would just sell that recorder and get one with a mini stereo input which will make your rig way smaller.

beatkilla - ta for the advice. Size of the rig is to a degree not that big a deal as the places I go have little if any security. For other shows by bigger artists I know there will be folk with better kit than me so I'l just get copies from them. I like the DR40 as it does 2 recordings at once, one with reduced volume etc  I'll have a look on the yard sale.

Can you switch phantom power off on the DR-40 or does it always pass phantom power to the mics?

If phantom power is not switchable: There are some "Phantom Blocker" adapters by Triton Audio (in the NL) but they're XLR-M to XLR-F.
Otherwise, I know that companies like Pinknoise or Canford (in the UK), Kortwich (DE), Audiosense (BE) or AudioRoot (FR) also build custom cables. Probably worth asking.

Tradecount - thanks. Phantom power can be switched off but the CA14s need 9V power. I'll check out the companies you've mentioned. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

If rig size is of no concern to you, why not just go with a simple battery box?

Have it shipped to me and I'll send it over to you as long as you pay the shipping charges. PM me for details.

The dropdown menu selection choices can be a little confusing on the Naiant site. Make sure you are getting the correct product since returning it will be a hassle.
