I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

Sankens are also mini-mics...along with the 4061's, just about the tiniest mics you'll ever see. Check out the COS-11's: http://www.sanken-mic.com/english/condenser/cos-11s.html

Wish there were more recordings done with the COS-11s... there are some good Japanese Manson and Tool tapes, and I need to get a hold of some of teh Metallica Fillmore shows done with them. Variety is nice.

yeah, mount the mics as high as possible.  i use a  toque (or beanie) run them up your neck and over your ears.  wear a hoodie to cover up your neck.  of course this method becomes really, really annoying in the summer time.

Big fan of the hat trick, although I look (and feel) like a tool when I'm wearing a baseball cap backwards. I use the Sound Pro SP-CMC-4s when stealthing, tucked in the elastic lining around the cap just in front of my ears in a directly forward setup. No other config, though I should probably try something like a wire bar next time. Then I just run the cables out the back of my hat together with electrical tape (my hair is a little dark anyway), and I normally wear a hoodie when out stealthing. With the hood, that blocks most of the view of my cables anyway. I don't normally stealth in small clubs, and in big venues like stadiums and amphitheaters, getting in the door is 90% of the problem. The rest is just keeping a very low profile.

I tried doing the shoulder mount once at a Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer concert at my school. I didn't think a baseball cap would look appropriate in a fine arts theater. But the recording is pretty muffled and if you crank the bass, you can actually hear my heart beat. It's kinda weird. Won't do that again.

That's kinda cool.  Little nervous and blood pressure pumped up while stealthing, though, eh? :P

Does anyone have a pic of the baseball cap method?  Also what are the consequences if I do happen to get caught taping?  Any helpful things i can say to get me out of the jam besides running?

hehe, the other night i was wearing a hoodie right behind the pit and it was getting a bit steamy, especially with the dykes crowding my space.  But it worked so well!  I dare not walk around the Warfield anymore without a hoodie ever since armen and spargey got caught ;)

fake a heart attack?

If you already have some sets recorded, keep your tapes, hide them, shove them down your pants, hand them off to a third party in the commotion. They'll escort you out.  But really, you shouldn't be worried, just keep a low profile and you'll be fine.

i've only ever stealthed from my shoulders; cos i've always figured that if the mics are on my head and i move my head much, then the sound will be quite noticeably different. and i do move my head a lot at gigs. i move my shoulders also, but nowhere near as much as i move my head.

What the heck kind of a question is that? ;)
Moke: Speaking of festivals, Schwilly and I did the only all-day festival of our genre, Ozzfest, in 2002. Didn't want to waste tape on 2003, but I sure did it in 2002. Neck-breaker! (And wrist-breaker for Schwill and the ECM-MS908...)

Nonsense.  Very possible, reasonable even.  I've done it myself as have many people on this board.

Let's try to regain some focus here.  I've seen three issues raised here by you, porphyry:

[1] how to get soundboard recordings from BIG bands who are not necessarily taper friendly

You answered this question yourself with confirmation from Moke on the first post and the addition of stealthing as an option.  I would also add as an option: don't record and simply try to download/trade for leaked recordings online if and when they're available.

[2] What are ALDs and how do they work?

Answered.

[3] How to remove the frustrations of taping with mics

Answered.

I'm not sure what else to say, porphyry, we've essentially answered the questions posed.  Perhaps we did not provide the answers you wanted to hear, but to the best of our ability, answers nonetheless.  Maybe we should approach [3] from a different, more constructive angle:

What frustrations, exactly, are so overwhelming it removes the joy from taping?
