Topic: TASCAM DR-05 RECORDING SNAFU

I found two never been used 2 GB cards in my desk. I'm wondering what setting(s) I should use for the upcoming VH show as far as recording quality. The Tascam's booklet has a section on recording duration as far as card capacity goes when recording in WAV format:

16 bit @ 44.1 khz: 3:22
16 bit @ 48 khz: 3:06
16 bit @ 96 khz: 1:33

24 bit @ 44.1 khz: 2:15
24 bit @ 48 khz: 2:04
24 bit @ 96 khz: 1:02

Thinking I should maybe buy a 4 GB card instead....

the problem with a 2GB card is the header info on the card, and/or windows' "thumbs.db" could push the card's capacity low enough that it can't auto-write a 2GB file if it runs over 2GB

use a 4GB at a minimum unless you are certain you won't run to 2GB

I was considering an 8 GB.

i use 4s and 8s in my dr-07. nothing bigger or smaller

Called tech support @ TASCAM/TEAC today. Turns out it wasn't so much the size of my card, as much as it was the type of card. The techie I spoke to said often it has to do with the manufacturer. The card I was trying to use was by Samsung and given to me free when I bought my cellphone last year. I went out and a new Sandisk 4 GB, installed it, and let my recorder run for almost 2 1/2 hours and everything went fine. Problem solved.

My Dr-5 had also an issue with some Transcend cards, but i was able to rescure the recordings with the "0 Byte" file size:

1. run chkdsk :[drive letter] /f
2. search for the .chk file that was created (maybe it is hidden by the windows machine, i used a knoppix boot disk to make it viewable) and rename that .chk to .wav
3. use "audiohack"; audiohack /N [file.wav]
4. import the created .raw file to an audio editor (use raw import, not open), like import raw in audacity, usually the machine records "little endian", and choose sample frequency and bit depth you did in the recording
5. now you`ve got the file back (or most of the file until the moment the machine crashed), and go on like normal (mastering if neccessary, then export to Wave, Flac etc ...)


now i ordered some cards from the compatibility list if the issue is solved, maybe do some tests if the pre record function causes the crashes... firmware is newest.
