Title: PS3 Custom firmware in the wild
Post by: kindms on January 05, 2011, 04:35:18 PM
So I have been reading about the PS3 being completely opened up now. I guess in the last week or so they have managed to get around the encryption and custom firmware is now a reality.

How long do you think it will be before 24Bit flac playback is possible ?

I dont even care about pirated games. I just want full flac support so I can retire my PC

If you're thinking this will be like updating features to your existing PS3 you'd be partially wrong.  What they have set this up for is a homebrew firmware replacement.  Very similar to what XBMC originally did for the XBOX.  A total replacement firmware.  So basically you're buying a PS3 for the hardware and running your own OS on it.   Integrating FLAC support onto the Sony dashboard isn't how it will be done.  Think FLAC support by running a Linux box in PS3 clothing.
