Title: blu ray player that does dvd-audio
Post by: scb on January 19, 2011, 08:47:55 AM
I guess it's time to get a blu ray player, but I would like something that will also play dvd-audio discs and that will output 24/96 stereo over the spdif out.  what are the best options?

i'll be replacing an arcam dv27a...will be sad to see it go

The Oppo players are fairly popular. I understand they are a very good value.

I'll second that, our new Oppo 93 Blu-Ray player is real sweet, streams Netflix similar GUI as Roku and plays everything including; SACD, HDCD, DVD-Audio/Video, Blu-ray3D, FLAC & even low tech MP3 discs and Video CD's.  Doesn't stream LMA though, but who knows maybe with a firmware update down the line.

Check it out if you are in the market for a disc player now...

does it pass 24/96 over spdif from dvd-a?

My arcam is still a winner over the analog outputs...

We just got it 2 weeks ago and are using the multichannel analog outputs to a Sunfire pre pro, also HDMI directly to the set.  It has replaced our Pioneer Elite DV47A universal DVD/CD/SACD player.

The manual is posted online.  --->  http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-93/blu-ray-BDP-93-Support.aspx

from the manual:

Quote
Due to copyright restrictions and bandwidth limitations, full resolution audio from DVDAudio
discs cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. To listen
to DVD-Audio in full resolution, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections.

I wonder if that applies to just multichannel dvd-audio

I emailed Oppo about digi outs - they said it'll output 24/192 over spdif

^^^Great^^^

I had e-mailed them about adding LMA streaming like available with Roku. They responded that they were passing the request on to those that may be able to make it happen. The BDP93 was only just released for public sale starting late December.

A BDP95 will be released later if you need more than the 93.

I've looked into the Oppo BDP 93 and it does look pretty good.  For $500 at Amazon (maybe cheaper elsewhere) it seems like a good deal given it's quality and feature set.  Definitely need a player than can play all my SACDs now that my first gen PS3 is toast and my new PS3 slim can't.  It looks nice too, better than most of the models from the big manufacturers.

Just to add to the list ,another one that does dvd-audio, same price as Oppo's BDP93.

Right but it you can also hook up external hard drives directly to the Oppo (via eSATA or USB) so no need for discs.

Looks like the BDP-95 is going to retail for $999

Pretty damn pricey considering the next model down (BDP-93) is half that.

the 95 is a 93 with upgraded analog.  it has dedicated stereo outs (rca or analog) and upgraded dacs on each channel.

if you use spdif or hdmi for audio, the 95 will give you no benefit

but if you plan on using the analog outs, the 95 will be a nice upgrade over the 93

I understand that its an upgrade on multiple components and i'm sure the price is warranted for whats in there.  Just a bit of a surprise of the price difference between the 93 and 95.

Can anyone comment on the video quality of dvds upsampled on the Oppo 93? I want to get a new universal blu-ray player, but I want to make sure I get one that plays back dvd-video with good quality.

I've read that the new Denon's do a really good job but they seem to be a lot more expensive than the Oppo players.

We just had a full ISF "Imaging Science Foundation" calibration done on the LG plasma yesterday.  The calibrator confirmed that the set does an excellent job for up-conversion so he didn't check the up-conversion quality of the Oppo BDP 93.  Too bad I didn't notice your post until after he left, he was here when you posted but I spent the day with him for the full calibration process and missed your post.

I do however believe that the Oppo 93 would be fine for up-conversion too from what I've read about it.

We may have him back for something else, maybe he could check it then, I'm sure he might be interested in knowing the up-conversion quality of it himself.

got my oppo 93 set up

fired up PS3 Media Server on my mac.

form the oppo, browsed my home network wirelessly and saw the PS3 server on the mac.  i'm currently streaming 24/96 flac files wirelessly to the oppo, then sending the 24/96 audio over hdmi to my pre/processor.

i'm in heaven right now.

Nice.  I've been looking to dump my LG blu ray player for an Oppo...I really want the ability to play SACD and DVD-A's as I please.  Good to hear they have netflix streaming on this unit.  Does it have pandora or youtube?

Marantz UD5005 BD/DVD/SA-CD Universal Player

I have a Marantz UD7001, one of the preceding models, and it drops the sound and video for five seconds or so intermittently when playing DVDs.  It is maddening and happens around four or five times on every movie that I watch.  Now the transport mechanism is screwing up, not opening sometimes and refusing to recognize some brand new CDs.  I would never buy another Marantz again on the basis of this unit, especially considering it's only two years old.

It's unfortunate, as the unit sounds fantastic when it works properly and plays anything except for Blu-Ray, which is fine with me.  I'm going to replace it with a Cambridge Audio 751BD when it is released.  I have an Azur 840A integrated amplifier also by Cambridge and it is really awesome.  The 751BD is similar to the Oppo 95 but will integrate with the IA that I have so I don't have to screw around with multiple remotes and modes of operations and the like.
