Title: MXL 990 Stereo mic or best cost efective stereo mic solution
Post by: RMayberry on January 17, 2017, 03:08:56 PM
I am looking for any reviews on the MXL 990 Stereo mic please.

I am looking to get a stereo mic and it looks like a cost effective solution.
Mike Joly at Oktava also mods these caps. He sold me my modded Rode nt6 caps and I love them. BUT, the mod is about $350.
For that amount I could get a better stereo mic. I am looking for something under $150.

OR, any suggestions or a good but, not expensive stereo mic.
I have used a friends Audio Technica AT822 on MANY MANY MANY occasions and gotten great results but, want other options too.

Thanks everyone.

I haven't used the stereo mic but long ago I had a MXL 990, the mono version. It was a turd. I gave it away.

Their advertisement says "sweet, silky highs". Well if your idea of sweet and silky is harsh and grating to the point of not being usable then they are right.

I would get an AT 822 if I wanted a stereo mic on a budget. Nothing special but it is fairly neutral and runs for a year off a single battery.

I just picked this one up and will be using it Saturday to record Drivin' & Cryin' ... I'll keep you updated if you like.  It's got nice specs for the price.  It's currently $99, but yesterday when I purchased it was $79.  So you may want to see if the price drops back down. Anyways, just trying to help :)

In addition, the MXL 990 seems to consist of two cardioids with only 90 degrees between their axes. That's not a serious pickup method for music recording unless the microphone is quite close to the musicians.
