'special' microphone cable...
« on: May 31, 2009, 04:27:29 AM »
Hello,

Does anybody know how/where to get the 'special' microphone cable that e.g. Sennheiser uses for their lapel mics?
It's really thin, flexible, very strong (has a separate steel wire) and is usually terminated in a small, expen$ive Lemo connector (mini-XLR-ish but smaller).
What is the brandname/type that I need to look for to get that cable?

And now that we're talking about Lemo as well: Does anybody know about a cheaper, but similar connector? It has to be small, locking and well made. Connector needs to carry about three wires.
A locking, angled mini-jack would do but where to get the plugs and chassis-sockets?

Tips are welcome!

Kind regards,
Udo

Can't you use any (not specific Sennheiser) thin and strong cable?
If so: does anybody here have the tip?

Chris, what's the Mogami part number on that cable you have?
I'd like to look at the specs.

Markertek carries Mogami 2697.
This cable looks thin etc. Is it strong and does it sound OK? Then it might fit udovdh's requirements.

What lengths of this cable would you think are acceptable?

Here are some information on Mogami Cables:

http://www.mogamicable.com/Bulk/micr_cables/lavalier/lavalier.htm

http://www.mogami.com/e/cad/mic-cable.html

http://www.mogami.com/e/mit/distributors.pdf

For longer runs the W2901 seems to be a better choice.

Hi Udo,
You can look for Neutrik's NanoCon http://www.neutrik.com/de/de/industry/204_1723120361/NanoCon%c2%ae_productlist.aspx or their new mini-XLR comming soon. I think they will be a lot cheaper than the Lemos or Fischer. Binder have some small size conneectors too.

Udo,

Is it a female chassis mount you are looking for? Lemo, Fischer and Binder 712 have many options.

Have you found a source where to buy the Neutrik NanoCon? You can find NanoCon, Lemo and Binder at www.distrelec.com.

The Swedish pricelist says 12-17€/each. That is equal to the prices of Lemo!

Either gender. As long as it's a decent chassis mount that I can use.

My Lemo's were mor expensive and I cannot attch them to a wire myself yet...
Nanocon can solve that problem. Got a sample set on the way.

I saw this http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-XLRF3-XLRM3 on Sound Professionals site.
It says "BALANCED MICROPHONE EXTENSION CABLE USING PROFESSIONAL CONNECTORS AND AUDIO TECHNICA SMALL DIAMETER (APPROX 1/8 INCH) DOUBLE SHIELDED UNIPOINT CABLE", I'm a noob, but is this what we are talking about? I am looking for a thinner XLR cable too, but about to wire my own (yet).

I'd suggest one of the these- both excellent, in quad config.

CANARE L4E5C MINI XLR

BELDEN 1804A MINI XLR - a bit smaller diameter than above
