Squeezebox
« on: June 18, 2013, 06:20:43 AM »
I've belatedly taken the plunge and ordered a Squeezebox Duet and was wondering how other people had their systems set up.

I've delved into the Logitech fora and it seems that running a HP Proliant Microserver is a popular and stable choice. But there's definitely a level of computer nous on there that far out-strips mine - are there any non-experts here running a similar set up?

I don't want to leave a dedicated PC running for this and the NAS route seems quite fraught. I'm hoping that someone here can reassure me that the Microserver route is possible for mere mortals.

I run the server software on my PC. You can set the software to boot the machine over the LAN. So if it is off it will start the machine and fire up the server software for you. If you don't mind waiting the minute or so between turning on your Duet and your server being available to listen to then it isn't a big deal. Also you don't need the server if you'll be listening to streams. It will just use your squeezebox account that they make you sign up for.

Thanks for that.

I don't really want to do down the road of running it on a computer if I can avoid it - power consumption, somewhere to keep it and the need to replace the HD or run an external drive make it a bit too much of a hassle for my purposes. Perhaps if I was still running a desktop in a corner somewhere...

You could get a synology single disk or dual disk setup. It will run the software and is about the size of a large external enclosure

It doesn't look like the Duet has USB. The Squeezebox Touch that I have allows USB Stick and will run the server from there if you don't want to run a PC/server.

The apps work really well (ie Pandora, slacker etc) I haven't looked to see if there is any apps for cloud based storage of music collections. You might look there to see if the issue has been addressed.

This appeals to me :o) The HP device listed above seems to have four five bays and, if I understand the forum posting correctly, allows people to install a USB stick with the software plus a cd-drive to rip the discs. But the process of getting it up and running looked mind-boggling. I suspect the simpler NAS solution will be the way to go for me.

Ta for that - will look into this, if only for back-up puposes; don't fancy having to rip and encode everything more than once...
